Last April, Canonical released Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, the new extended support version of Canonical’s operating system. Although there are users on the internet who criticize it, in our opinion it is one of the best versions that has seen the light of day, and the recommended option for anyone who has a server at home or wants to leave Windows 11 aside.

Throughout their life cycle, that is, the 10 years of support guaranteed by the developer, LTS versions receive several minor updates (subversions) that gradually improve the system. These are useful, for example, when downgrading the operating system in two or three years, since it avoids having to downgrade all the patches released since day 1 of this distro.

The last LTS, for example, is in its fourth subversion (22.04.4), while Ubuntu 24.04 was about to receive its first maintenance release. But this time, Canonical is encountering a series of unexpected problems that prevent it from continuing with its plans.

What is Ubuntu 24.04.1

The first version of the operating system that we receive and can download is the normal one: 24.04. Updates are downloaded and installed from apt, or from the Ubuntu update center (if we use the desktop), and so we can keep it up to date.

When a new version of the operating system is released, it is very prone to minor bugs and errors that need to be fixed. Canonical releases the corresponding updates to update the system, and everything is ready. However, to save users these problems, and to avoid them having to download all the patches if they decide to install this system, a few months after the release of the version, when everything is already more polished, the first sub-version of this system arrives: Ubuntu 24.04.1. The following sub-versions take longer to arrive, and are usually less relevant, but the first one marks a turning point, and is usually the gateway for most users.

These updated versions also usually include new versions of the graphics drivers and the Kernel (what is known as the “hardware enablement stack” or “HWE”). So, if you were having any problems trying to boot your system from a USB, you will be able to do so without any problems starting with this version.

When is the new update coming?

As confirmed by Ubuntu developers, due to the last-minute problems that have been detected, and in order to allow users to upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04 as smoothly, stable and secure as possible, they have finally decided to delay the release of this update for two weeks.

So, if everything goes according to plan and there are no last-minute bugs, the new Ubuntu 24.04.1 will be available on August 29th of this year. Users who already have Ubuntu 24.04 installed will be able to update it by installing the updates with “apt upgrade”, while those who want to download the Ubuntu ISO to install it will be able to do so in this version from that date.

Also, on the same day (August 29), Canonical is planning to release the fifth update of its latest LTS, namely 22.04.5. It’s going to be a big day for releases, no doubt.
