Microsoft delays Windows Recall AI: privacy and security in doubt

Since the software giant began talking about its next Artificial Intelligence platform, the controversy generated has been enormous. One of the main reasons for all this is the large data collection that Recall performs in Windows.

In reality, here we are referring to an AI that will be integrated with the operating system’s search engine to significantly improve its functionality. At this moment it is in full development and testing period, but it seems that things are not going as well as one might initially think. Basically, we could say that Recall will become the replacement for the search engine that we are used to in Windows for certain computers.

But one of the biggest controversies generated by this intelligent platform is that it compiles practically everything we do on the PC. Hence, those who most care about their privacy do not agree at all with this new Microsoft project. Furthermore, the hardware required to make Recall work is somewhat peculiar and not just any computer will work.

However, as we told you, it seems that the tests carried out are not going as well as Microsoft would like. Hence precisely why at this moment it has made the decision to delay its launch. And at this moment the company has announced the delay in the launch of its AI-based function.

From the company’s point of view, this is done so that it can be tested and further assured in aspects such as privacy and security. This will be done to make it more reliable before releasing it in public preview on Copilot+ PCs.

New security questions in Windows Recall

Initially this launch was planned for a public preview edition for June 18 along with the arrival of the new Copilot + AI PCs. But now the company says they are delaying the event. The main reason for all this is some security flaws that have been recently detected, something important if we take into account the enormous amount of data that Recall collects automatically.

And the new function based on Artificial Intelligence takes screenshots of all active windows on the PC every two seconds. These are analyzed by an AI model to extract information and add it to a database. Since Microsoft announced it, privacy advocates and cybersecurity experts have been warning that Windows Recall is a nightmare in this regard.

It is feared that attackers will take advantage of all this to steal user data. Microsoft assured that the function would be activated by default on the new Copilot+ AI devices and encrypted using BitLocker. But you should know that BitLocker automatically decrypts the contents of a drive when we log in to the computer. This makes the drive accessible to malware and anyone who has physical access to the PC.

Hence, now Microsoft has delayed its launch to improve these security measures implemented by Windows Recall and pay more attention to the experts. It is currently unclear what additional security measures the company plans to incorporate into the feature or a new release date.
