There is no doubt that everything related to Artificial Intelligence is here to stay, although there are proposals that are more accepted than others. One of the most controversial and that has generated the greatest amount of criticism is Microsoft’s Recall, and it hasn’t even been launched yet.
Here we are talking about an AI proposal that has been rumored for a long time and that will be integrated sooner or later in the final versions of Windows 11. It is an extremely powerful function that will allow us to perform advanced searches in the Microsoft operating system, although with a serious drawback. And that is that in order to work correctly, it needs to put our privacy at risk and track everything we do in Windows.
As you can imagine, this is precisely where all the controversy that Recall is generating even before its launch comes from. At this point we can say that although it is not yet available in Windows 11, this AI has proven to be extremely controversial since it was first announced a few months ago. As it could not be otherwise and from Microsoft’s point of view, Recall will help users in their day-to-day life with the PC by taking snapshots of their activity every few seconds.
This provides a way to go back in time and jump to a previous activity in the event that we have a problem with our computer. But as many of you may recall, such was the uproar caused by the security and privacy implications of this feature that Microsoft has already made some concessions. All of this to allay the widespread complaints about the feature itself.
Microsoft will allow removing Windows Recall
First, the software giant removed the feature from preview builds of Windows 11. Shortly after, it made it clear that it would make the feature available to everyone, but as an option rather than being enabled by default. But despite all this, criticism about the privacy of this AI has not ceased, and as far as we know now, it turns out that it will be possible to completely uninstall it from our computers.
This is a discovery made by user Deskmodder, who has already made it public on his own blog. From there we already know that Microsoft has decided not only to make Recall optional, but also to make the entire feature an optional component of Windows 11 for removal.
What we don’t know at this point is whether Recall will be installed by default on Windows 11-compatible devices. We can only assume that it will be installed and disabled, but even if it is, there will be the option to uninstall it from the system entirely. It’s very likely that even if AI is disabled, many users will feel more comfortable removing it entirely, as many people find the privacy violation of this feature excessive.
This is something that has been seen in the latest Insider version, which is great news for all those who have shown their rejection of the Recall feature that Microsoft is trying to sell us from the beginning. Although the company did not expect a great acceptance of this function, it was certainly not aware of the enormous rejection it would cause.
