Telefónica will once again increase the price of one of its services in its main brand, Movistar. The company offers mobile telephony, Internet and television and, for some time, the cost of its rates has not stopped growing across the board. In May, it will continue to do so, but this time it will only affect its sports offer on Movistar Plus+.
Over time, Movistar has become much more than a mobile phone and fiber provider. Its Movistar Plus+ streaming television platform is one of the services for which customers continue to rely on this operator. However, the new price increase that is coming for May could put some people off.
When and how much will prices rise?
The Spanish company has been notifying users subscribed to the Motor and Total Sports packages for several weeks of an increase in the monthly cost. Specifically, the increase will be five euros and will become effective on May 13.
From this date, the Movistar Plus+ Motor pack, which includes Formula 1, Moto GP, channels such as Caza y Pesca and Garage TV, will go from 10 to 15 euros per month. That is, consumers who want to continue enjoying this content will have to pay 50% more than they currently pay.
Meanwhile, the subscription to Deportes Total, which consists of all sports, will rise from 19 to 24 euros per month. In this case, those affected are fans of the NBA, Liga Endesa, F1, MotoGP, golf, tennis and most sports content, with the exception of soccer, which is in the Champions and Fútbol Total packages.
Those who do not want to pay more will be able to cancel without any penalty due to the change in contract conditions.
Why do prices rise?
It is not the first time that rates have become more expensive on Movistar. This April, the operator increased the price of six of its Fusion services: Total X2 (182 euros), Total Plus (196 euros), Total Plus X4 (213 euros), Total Plus + 4 lines (223 euros), Total Plus X2 + 4 lines (235 euros) and Total Plus X4 + 4 lines (240 euros).
The new statement that Movistar has sent to all affected subscribers explains the decision in detail: «At Movistar, our priority is to maintain the level of quality of our services, investing to ensure the best connectivity experience on the market and a content offering. of first class, despite the increase in costs in the sector. For this reason, on May 13, 2024 we will update the prices.
In addition to the increase in the Total Fusion plans and the Total Motor and Sports packs, Movistar already raised the prices of its TV platform at the beginning of 2024. The cost of the basic package for its clients went from 11 to 12 euros per month.
In January 2023, the operator also increased the cost of all its television packages. A year ago, their excuse was that they were forced to do so to contain inflation, although they assured that “in general” prices were “below the rise in the Consumer Price Index” (CPI).
