There are many users who are unhappy, and angry, with Windows 11. The new operating system is not suitable for everyone, as it breaks with many of the features and functions that we are used to, adds aesthetic changes and modern functions and Furthermore, it prevents its installation on old computers. That is why many users consider switching to an alternative system, but is it really that easy?
The longer we have been using an operating system, the more we have become accustomed to it. And the slightest change can be annoying. You just have to see how the changes in the Windows 11 start menu or taskbar generate all kinds of complaints. Many times we think about buying a Mac, or giving Linux a try. However, we do not stop to think about the implications that this entails.
A totally different interface
If we are bothered by minor changes in the interface of Windows 11, we must take into account that both Linux and macOS completely change the aesthetics of the operating system. We have a new desktop, new menus, new options, new settings, new windows, new keyboard shortcuts… absolutely everything is different when changing the operating system.
Therefore, even if the change is for the better, we are going to have to spend time getting used to the new interface, the new menus, and configuring the entire operating system in such a way that we feel more comfortable. Of course, in macOS, the customization options are much more limited than in Windows, another factor to take into account.
Say goodbye to your programs and games
When switching to macOS or Linux, we must take into account that the typical .EXE programs will no longer work. Developers must create their own versions for these operating systems. And, although in macOS we are going to find most commercial programs, in Linux a lot of software, such as Microsoft Office, or Adobe programs (such as Photoshop) will not work. We will have to look for alternatives (and, furthermore, get used to them).
More complicated tasks (in the case of Linux)
Everything that, until now, you were used to doing easily in Windows, in Linux is going to be more complicated. Many advanced configuration and administration tasks will force you to use commands in a terminal, as will other basic tasks such as installing new programs or updating the system. Think twice before.
Increased spending (in the case of macOS)
In the event that you think about making the leap to macOS, you should bear in mind that you are going to have to make a large investment. But, when we say big, it is very big. Mac computers are very expensive, and although their design is beautiful and careful, the hardware inside is not so much. In terms of performance, we are paying a price that is much higher than that of a generic computer assembled from pieces for Windows.
You will return to Windows
In the end, most people who get tired of Windows and try other operating systems sooner or later end up going back to Windows. And, if you had already gotten used to using some functions of your other operating system, now it’s time to start from scratch again. Therefore, keep this in mind, since, in the end, you will have to do twice the work, and spend time that, in the end, will end at the starting point.
