The biggest change is coming to the Google search engine: Discover news lands on PC

Discover was a revolution in the way we usually view all types of content on the Internet. Google began to show us, on our mobile phones, relevant news that matched our interests. In this way, just by opening the browser, or simply sliding our finger to the right on the main screen, we could access all the news. This function has been on all mobile phones for several years now. But, today, Google has taken a giant step that will also change the way we browse from the PC.

A few hours ago, Google began testing a new news feed within the search engine itself. This news feed is, broadly speaking, an adaptation of the Discover that we all have on our mobile, but for the computer.

Taking advantage of the fact that the design of Google’s main website is very basic, and has a lot of wasted space, the Internet giant is going to take the opportunity to embed this news feed at the bottom. In this way, simply by entering the search engine we can find all kinds of news that match our interests.

Google with Discover

At the moment, this new feature is only available in the United States, and only a very limited group of users has it activated. It’s clear that Google wants to experiment with how it works and how people accept it before planning a global launch.

At the moment, according to the first image that we have been able to see, the experience is very similar (the same, too much) to that of Discover on mobile. We have a news feed, and a bar on the right with “cards” that we can customize for sports, weather, stocks, etc. Of course, while other search engines, such as Bing, allow us to hide this feed if we don’t want it, Google seems to not give us that option. Or, at least, it’s not available yet.

Google is late with Discover on PC

It is true that better late than never. But Google is very late in bringing Discover news to the PC. And, if that were not enough, at the moment only in the “beta” phase and for a very limited audience. Meanwhile, its main rival, Bing, already has its news section both in the search engine and on the home page of its browser, Edge.

Bing News

Likewise, Microsoft also has a news feed integrated within Windows itself, so by simply using the operating system we will be seeing this news.

In our opinion, although we usually use Discover a lot on mobile, we don’t really like Bing news on PC. We have a panel where we specify our interests to see news related to them, and the truth is that it does not respect it, showing us news that has nothing to do with the tastes and interests that we have marked. What’s more, after blocking dozens of websites, news from those pages continues to appear.

Microsoft, although a pioneer, has serious problems with news on PC. Let’s hope Google does things right. Basically it’s not that complicated either: just do the same thing you have on your mobile, but on your PC.
