Cybercrime is evolving rapidly and we have already seen countless situations in which a team of hackers has tried to loot information and steal all our data. In the case at hand, a new scam attempt has been discovered that threatens our security through fraudulent emails impersonating Banco Santander. Therefore, whether you are a customer or not, you should be aware of the dangers it causes and how to identify it.
The practice of phishing is still on the rise, unfortunately, and it is something that we cannot eliminate outright, but we can avoid it through warnings and making the user aware that their personal data may be in danger at any time. And these types of fraudulent emails frequently impersonate well-known companies so that we fall into the trap.
In relation to this, Josep Albors, director of research and awareness at ESET Spain, has sent a statement attaching the detection of a false transfer receipt from Banco Santander in order to strip all the client’s banking data. Thanks to this alert we can share with you how to identify these types of emails so as not to become a victim of cybercrime.
Impersonation of Banco Santander
One of the most frequent activities of cybercriminals is sending suspicious emails by impersonating very popular companies to carry out the technique of social engineering, that is, deceiving the user with a persuasive or threatening text that intimidates them. and transfer your credentials.
This new scam is related to messages sent to emails from Spanish companies whose sender poses as Banco Santander. Although there will be people who do not open this email, either because they are not a company or because they are not clients of this entity, it could make them believe that it is actually an official receipt and, to clear up doubts, they fall into the networks of cybercriminals.
How to identify fraudulent email?
To realize that this email is completely false, we must look at the text “Proof of transfer” in the subject line. Next, we must look at the body of the message to see the following indication: “a transfer receipt has been found as suggested by your client.”
They will then provide us with an attachment that says “Transfer” for us to download and find out what it is. What we will download will be an executable .exe file and the only thing it will do is install itself on your computer to infect all your data so that they can access our computer to collect as much information as they can.
To avoid this type of problem, it is necessary to apply the necessary security measures to prevent confidential information from being usurped and all our data being compromised. The best option for this is to mark the email as spam and move it to the trash immediately. However, it is always advisable to run the antivirus in case there is any trace of malware or other types of threats left on the computers.
