These SSD drives are doomed to disappear forever

Over the years, storage units have evolved, not only in terms of storage space, but also units that are faster. However, here we are not going to buy whether an HDD or an SSD is better, here we are going to assess a specific model of solid state drives that may have its days numbered.

Specifically, we are referring to SATA SSDs with a 2.5-inch form factor. A particular piece that over the years could disappear forever from stores. For this reason, we are going to see the different reasons that we can find to see what the future of this SSD model will be.

The end of SATA SSDs

The end of this particular hardware will not be in a few days, nor in a few months. Most likely, they will gradually disappear as new components appear over time that will replace the 2.5-inch form factor SATA SSDs forever. And, in this case, the replacement for this particular model will be the SSDs with the M.2 form factor.

Although, to understand why SATA SSDs disappear, there are a series of arguments that we have to know before taking it for granted, but as we said, they will not disappear overnight:

  • The first point is that SSDs can take up more space on a laptop motherboard than an M.2 SSD.
  • The type of installation is different, SATA requires two cables, one so that it can be connected to the motherboard and the other that carries voltage from the storage source. Instead, the other model goes directly on the plate.

  • As HardZone’s colleagues comment, the bandwidth of this model is lower, “6 Gbps”. Basically, because it is the limit of the SATA port. Therefore, “it can transmit 10 times less data in the same period of time than one with a PCIe interface.”
  • Most of the laptops we find today come with a replaceable M.2 drive and an extra slot of the same type.

The benefits of this solid state drive

As much as SSDs with an M.2 connection have been created to finally shelve SATA, the truth is that there are still many users who continue to use this particular solid state drive. Also, until the transition is fully completed from one standard to another, it will take years.

However, it is important to mention what are the factors in favor of SATA SSDs so they are still taken into account. And, mainly, the great differentiator between these SSD hard drives is found in their price. In addition, there are also many computers that do not have M.2 slots, so there is no choice but to use a SATA SSD or buy an adapter, having to add an extra expense.

And finally, the life cycles between the two units are different. For example, SATA drives have long life cycles, with M.2 drives being shorter, especially if it is constantly used to pass a lot of information. Therefore, we also find points in its favor, despite the fact that its disappearance will come in the coming years.
