This is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that cybercriminals use Netflix as a bait to scam people. In this case, the target is subscribers to this streaming platform, so they try to make users believe that their account will be suspended if they do not update their payment method details.

Don’t worry, Netflix hasn’t sent you an SMS to warn you that the account you use daily on this platform is going to be suspended. And they’re not going to ask you to update the details of the payment method you use. Mainly, because this streaming service doesn’t send text messages to communicate this type of actions. This is one of the many strategies that hackers use to impersonate this company.

Netflix will not suspend your account

One of the latest attempts by cybercriminals to scam users is based on using the identity of Netflix to steal the credit cards of users who have a subscription to this platform. The SMS they are receiving says the following: «Last warning before suspending your account, update your payment information through our site: resume-help.com«.

Netflix SMS Scam

At first glance, one of the clear signs that this is a scam is the fact that there are several spelling mistakes. And, on the other hand, the link leads directly to a fake website that has nothing to do with Netflix. So there are several points that should already serve to make us realize that this is clearly a scam.

When you enter the page that impersonates this streaming platform, you can see a menu to log in. But the most important thing comes when the message “your account is temporarily suspended” appears. In addition, users are warned that they will not have access to content and profiles, and it also warns that all devices have been disconnected. As for the latter, the easiest thing to do is to open the Netflix app and check how you can continue to have access to this platform’s catalog. So don’t worry.

To further alert subscribers of this service, we are also informed that the account will be deleted: “If you do not regularize your monthly payment, your account will be deleted on XXX.” Depending on when you receive this SMS, the day will be different. In our case, we are informed that it will be deleted on July 28, 2024.

Netflix SMS Scam

As you continue with the steps, this fake website will ask you for all kinds of personal information: name and surname, address, zip code, phone number, etc. So not only can they even steal your identity if you provide this information, but in the next step they give you a payment option to choose from: credit/debit card or gift card. Once all this information is entered and you confirm the payment, you will have completely fallen into the trap.

What do I do when I receive this scam SMS?

If you receive this SMS or an email that looks similar to this text message, be clear from the start that it is not Netflix. More than anything, because they will never ask you to give this type of sensitive information, not only the credit or debit card, but also the rest of your personal data. Therefore, the best thing you can do is delete the message or email you have received and not access the link that will take you to a fake page. This way, you will not fall for this latest scam that impersonates the well-known red streaming platform.
