Windows 11 24H2 has been one of the biggest updates we’ve seen since the launch of the operating system. This version, which is still slowly reaching all compatible PCs, landed a couple of months ago after a long wait full of changes and improvements of all kinds. However, Microsoft did not have time to include all the changes it had in mind for the launch of this version. And, therefore, this month of December we are going to see how a second wave of new features lands on the PCs that have already updated to this version.

We have already talked several times that Windows 11 24H2 was going to be an update that, until it is complete and fully functional, was going to take a long time. After its launch, Microsoft has already released some patches to improve its functionalities and add new features that had been left in the pipeline. But it has not been until now that the company has had a good battery of new features ready. And, in a couple of weeks, they will reach all users.

What’s new in the Windows 11 24H2 December update

The first of the changes that we will find after installing this new update is in the system tray. Specifically, in the date and time part of the operating system. The taskbar has been one of the most radical changes in Windows 11, and little by little it has been refined and improved according to user opinions.

Now, finally, one of the most annoying elements will have a solution: the date. Within the configuration we will find a new option called “Show abbreviated date and time.” When activated, a new design will be displayed that hides the year and takes up considerably less space.

Also, within System > Notifications, we will find a new option that will allow us to hide the bell icon that appears on the right side of the taskbar. This way, we can save a little more space.

The context menus are also going to receive several changes in the next update. For example, if we right-click on one of the icons pinned to the taskbar we can open a program as administrator directly. Start menu items also add new functions to the context menu, such as opening recent items, or shortcuts to certain functions.

Other changes that we will find in the new update are:

  • Dynamic lighting within the settings page. In addition to being able to find all the options related to this function within this section, we will also have new direction patterns, such as Wave and Gradient.
  • Within the task manager, in the “Performance” section, we find new hard drive identifiers, such as SATA SSD or NVMe SSD.

There will also be many bug fixes to improve the overall functioning of the operating system. Of course, we also do not rule out that there are bugs, problems and errors, as is common lately in Windows patches. Therefore, we recommend proceeding with caution and, if possible, waiting a few days before installing updates to learn about possible bugs that may be found.

When does it arrive?

This new patch will arrive, only for users who have already updated to Windows 11 24H2, on the second Tuesday of December, that is, on the 10th, in the afternoon. The update will be downloaded and installed automatically without us having to do anything, so it is likely that, suddenly, we will find these new features.

If not, we can always force the search for updates from the Settings menu, within the Windows Update section. And if you still don’t get Windows 11 24H2, don’t worry: Microsoft continues the massive rollout of its new version, and it’s easy for you to update before the end of the year.
