The story of annoying Windows 11 notifications is a never-ending story. Once again, another notification has appeared that is causing users and experts to show their displeasure about the situation. To make matters worse, it is a pop-up notification, which has the peculiarity of not being able to be avoided.

Microsoft filling Windows 11 with ads, notifications, advertising and other annoying elements is something that nobody is happy about. The operating system has changed its habits to bombard users in a rather annoying way that, unfortunately, does not seem to have an end.

An unfortunate message

The latest notification that some users have been seeing is related to the process of making backups in the cloud. What Microsoft does is notify users by informing them about how their systems are not protected using the backup solution that is integrated into the Windows 11 operating system. In this screenshot taken by Windows Latest, you can see what the notification looks like and how it covers a large screen space on the computer.

A backup notification appears in Windows 11

But, as we say, the message sent in the notification is a bit unfortunate. The reason is that, in it, Windows mentions that it is better to make backup copies so that, in this way, all the stored data is protected “in case something happens to the PC”. And, as some specialists mention, there is no doubt that the way of transmitting the message seems to have a touch of warning, perhaps too authoritarian.

What is Microsoft’s intention?

Of course, there is an additional objective behind this announcement. Microsoft does not only want more and more people to use OneDrive for backup purposes, but also promotes the purchase of additional storage space. And that is where the extra cost comes into play, since it offers to exceed the free amount of space of 5 GB. For a monthly payment of 2 euros, we will have 100 GB of cloud space at our disposal, while we can also pay 7 euros per month for 1 TB.

The bad thing about the notification is that it is programmed to appear whenever it is necessary. And Microsoft understands that it is necessary if you have not already made your backup in OneDrive. In this way, it pressures you to make the copy with the free space or to contract one of the paid options so that you can enjoy the service. It must be said, however, that the prices we have mentioned are monthly and that you can save money if you make the contract on an annual basis.

Microsoft OneDrive service rates in July 2024

If you close the notification and dismiss it, unfortunately, it won’t be the last time you see it. As several sources comment, Windows 11 brings back the notification so that you can continue to have the idea of backing up to OneDrive in mind. And it’s also fair to acknowledge that Microsoft isn’t recommending anything that isn’t a good idea. Having a backup of your files in the cloud can save you more than one disappointment and, on the other hand, the tool used works really well. But the way in which pressure is being put on the hiring of these services is what isn’t convincing users, since it’s noticeable that, more and more, Microsoft is adopting a more aggressive role. Most likely, this won’t be the last time we’ll see this type of notification.

After all, it is already becoming clear that Microsoft has found in Windows and its massive scale an ideal way to reach a huge number of potential customers for many of its services. Commercially it makes sense, but it is no less annoying.
