A couple of weeks ago the new version of Ubuntu, 24.04, reached users. This version is characterized by having extended long-term support (LTS) of up to 10 years, in addition to being focused on stability and maintenance both to run on home computers and servers. But after the release of this version, Canonical does not rest. And the most impatient users can now try what will be the next update of this system: Ubuntu 24.10.
Under the name “Oracular Oriole”, Canonical is already working on what will be the next update of its Linux operating system for desktop and servers. This new version, if everything goes as planned, will reach all users at the end of next October, and will focus on continuing the development and continuous improvement of the system.
At the moment, this first image is nothing more than the latest Ubuntu 24.04 LTS ISO with the first changes that Canonical has begun to implement. Therefore, when installing it we will not notice anything new, except, surely, stability and performance problems. The new “Oracular Oriole” will be the first of three upcoming Ubuntu updates (along with 25.04 and 25.10) that will lead the way to the next LTS version, which will reach all users in 2026. In this time, Canonical will have time to Experiment with changes to the desktop, your SNAP packages, and other elements of the system itself so that when 26.04 LTS reaches all users, it is as stable as possible.
News from Oracular Oriole
As for the news of the new Ubuntu 24.10, at the moment we know absolutely nothing about what Canonical has in mind. What’s more, if we install this first ISO image we will realize that, although it may have some internal changes, aesthetically it is still the current 24.04 LTS.
We will have the same wallpaper, the same programs, the same versions of the packages… practically everything remains the same, with the difference that some entries have already been changed in the Kernel.
For now we will have to wait to start knowing the first changes that will come with this next update.
How to download Ubuntu 24.10
This new version of the Canonical operating system is designed, above all, for developers and users who want to start testing its new features. It is still a pre-alpha version that probably has bugs, problems and errors, so its use on a production computer is not recommended at all.
If you are going to try it on a second test computer, want to prepare your applications for this version, or simply want to experiment with it in a virtual machine, you can download the first “daily” image of Ubuntu 24.10 from this link.
The date of the ISO is May 9, so it is fresh out of the oven. And, being a “daily” type image, it should be updated every, or almost every, day. Of course, we would recommend performing clean installations every time we are going to change versions to ensure that all image changes are correctly applied to our system.
