They notify you of a tax refund by SMS: the dangerous scam that sweeps

There are more and more scam attempts with which to try to get people to fall. Not only do we have to deal with spam or fraudulent calls with which they try to scam us, we can also receive different text messages with which we could lose a good sum of money. One of the clearest examples is the smishing campaign that has supplanted the Tax Agency.

The official Twitter account of the National Police has been the one who warned of the new wave of this famous SMS that warns us that we are going to receive a refund. For this reason, it is important to know how to act in the face of these text messages, since, depending on what we do, we could have fallen for their bait and become unwitting victims of this type of scam.

The false refund of the Tax Agency

The different methods of fraud and fraud are renewed, however, there are some methods that are always there and, if they are still here, it is because they are successful among cybercriminals. For this reason, the official Twitter account of the National Police has wanted to warn users not to fall into the trap if they receive the following text message on their mobile: «*TAX AGENCY* I qualify you for a tax refund, With amount of ‘244.59’. Find your form on the website«.

Although at first glance it can be seen that it is false, due to the errors that can be read, the link they give us does not belong to the Spanish Tax Agency. Therefore, you will have to be very careful when receiving this type of SMS. That is why the police advise us the following three points:

  • Don’t click on the link.
  • Delete the message.
  • Block the contact.

In this way, we will avoid involuntarily falling into this type of scam. Especially, because we could accidentally click on the link, being enough in some cases for them to steal money from our bank accounts. Therefore, it will be better to follow the steps that we have just given you recommended by the police.

However, if in your case you have already accessed the link inadvertently or because you had not paid attention and you have given your data to receive the supposed refund, it will be better to follow the instructions offered by the National Institute of Cybersecurity of Spain (INCIBE) :

  • You have to contact your bank immediately to report what has happened and cancel any transactions that may have been made.
  • In the event that you have provided personal data, such as the telephone number or email, remain vigilant and check that you are not the object of another type of fraud by these means or that your identity is not supplanted.
  • You can report this situation to the State Security Forces and Bodies (FCSE).

In this way, we will be able to solve the problem of having fallen into the trap of cyber criminals quickly. Especially if we have given in the fraudulent link some kind of relevant personal data.
