In recent times, images and Artificial Intelligence are being talked about more than ever, due to the proliferation of different tools to generate images through AI. However, although today we are talking about these same two ingredients, we are going to focus on the possibilities that AI can have to restore old or blurred images.

Whether it’s old paper photos that we’ve digitized or digital photos from early cameras with very low resolution, we keep them even though they look blurry as they can be a great way to keep a particular memory alive. Luckily, there’s also a way to prevent old photos from getting blurrier, and best of all, it’s completely free.

Restore old photos using AI

Thanks to the power of Artificial Intelligence, the tool called RestorePhotos.io from Vercel allows your old or blurry photos to look better than ever. Use the advanced capabilities of image recognition and regeneration software to scan your old blurry photos and give them extra sharpness.

According to the official description of its developers, “It uses a machine learning (ML) model from an applied research center called GFPGAN on the Replicate platform to restore photos of faces. This app provides the ability to upload any photo, which will send it through this ML model using a Next.js API route and return your restored photo.”

Since it was published a couple of days ago, this free and open source It has managed to have 22,000 unique users and 60,000 web page views and more than 38,000 processed image restorations.

The steps to follow, despite the sophistication of the technology used, could not be easier, since the page works thanks to an API that connects both platforms together, allowing you to upload your image and download it on the same page, without having to go somewhere else and then back.

  • Enter in RestorePhotos.io.
  • Press the button that says “Upload an Image”.
  • Select the path on your PC or mobile device where the photo you want to restore is located and click on it when you find it.
  • Once uploaded, you just have to wait for the restoration process to finish, which is not too slow, and when it is ready, you can click on “Download Restored Photo” to save the image on your device.

And if they are in black and white?

If the old photos that you want to retouch in this app are in black and white, maybe you should colorize these photos first. One of our recommendations, also powered by AI is InColor by MyHeritage, through which you can upload black and white or faded photos to retouch them and create more realistic and authentic images. With it you can both color and restore colors easily. You just have to load or drag the image and you will see the result. Photos uploaded without completing registration are automatically deleted, so it’s best to complete free registration.

The technologies used by the tool were exclusively licensed by DeOldify and have been created by deep learning experts. Everything works automatically through the technology, which decides whether the image is colored or restores its color. In a maximum period of 10 seconds you will get results. Also, you can easily share the results.
