The manufacturer QNAP has just launched its new high-performance business NAS servers in Spain. These NAS servers were announced at Computex 2023, but it is now that they hit the market with the latest in hardware. The new QNAP TS-hx77AXU-RP family is composed of the TS-h1277AXU-RP model with 12 bays for hard drives and SSDs, and also the TS-h1677AXU-RP model with 16 bays for housing hard drives and SSD drives. Business NAS servers are almost always rackable, since it is most common to place them in a rack in the company. In this case, the TS-h1277AXU-RP model will occupy a total of 2U of rack space, however, the TS-h1677AXU-RP model will occupy a total of 3U of rack space, so you should keep that in mind before purchasing them in case you don’t have enough space in the closet.
Main features
This new family of NAS servers from the manufacturer QNAP has top-of-the-range hardware, using the AMD Ryzen 7000 platform to provide the best possible performance. Both NAS models have the same hardware, the only difference between the TS-h1277AXU-RP model and the TS-h1677AXU-RP is the number of bays we have on the front, and that the TS-h1277AXU-RP model also has a version with an AMD Ryzen 5 instead of Ryzen 7.
Processor and RAM
The TS-h1277AXU-RP model is available in two different versions, depending on which processor we want, the associated RAM that is installed by default also changes:
- AMD Ryzen 5 7000: This processor is a 6-core and 12 processing threads, running at a speed of up to 5.1GHz in Turbo mode. It has a 64-bit x86 architecture, has floating point unit, AES-NI hardware encryption engine, and also hardware accelerated transcoding. If you choose this model, it will come with 16GB DDR5 RAM in a single module, expandable up to 128GB DDR5 capacity, and supports ECC memory as an option.
- AMD Ryzen 7 7000: This processor is an 8-core and 16 processing threads, running at a speed of up to 5.3GHz in Turbo mode. It has floating point unit, AES-NI encryption engine, and also hardware transcoding. This model comes with 32GB DDR5 RAM in a single module, expandable up to 128GB DDR5 capacity, and supports ECC memory as an option.
The TS-h1677AXU-RP model is only available with the more powerful AMD Ryzen 7 7000 processor, and also includes 32GB of DDR5 RAM by default. ECC memory installation is supported but optional, it does not include ECC type RAM by default.
Storage
The main difference between the two NAS server models is the number of bays to house hard drives or SSD units inside. Below, you can see the storage characteristics of the TS-h1277AXU-RP model:
- 12 bays to accommodate 3.5″ hard drives, 2.5″ hard drives or 2.5″ SSD drives. The discs are hot swappable.
- 2 M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 5.0 x2 drives for SSD cache acceleration, to be used as a main storage set, and even as a Qtier. It is compatible with NVMe PCIe 3.0 and 4.0 SSD drives.
In the case of the TS-h1677AXU-RP, the only thing that changes is that we have 16 bays to accommodate 3.5″ hard drives, because we have one more row for hard drives, the NAS will occupy 3U in the rack instead of the 2U occupied by the 12-bay model.
Connectivity
The technical characteristics related to connectivity are exactly the same in both models, in this aspect, nothing has changed. The truth is that QNAP has incorporated truly complete connectivity into this model, because not only do we have very complete default connectivity, but we can expand it using the available PCIe ports.
- 2 2.5G Multigigabit ports for the LAN. It supports both Wake on LAN and Jumbo Frames, in addition, we can create Link Aggregation.
- 2 10GBASE-T Multigigabit ports for the LAN. It also supports WoL, Jumbo Frames and Link Aggregation.
- 2 USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps Type A ports.
- One PCIe 4.0 x4 port, another PCIe 4.0 x8 port (if the first port is not in use) or x4 (if the first port is in use), and a third PCIe 4.0 x4 port.
Although the height is different on the two NAS servers due to the additional row of hard drives, the truth is that we have the same connectivity. Another very important feature for a professional NAS server like this model is that we have two 550W power supplies to provide electrical redundancy, and not have a power outage. As for the fans, we have a total of 3 60mm fans to properly cool all the components.
