Disney+ subscribers can now rub their hands, since the Marvel and Star Wars platform is preparing the premiere of a new technology. And it will respond to a request that users in the streaming sector have made for a long time.

When it comes to streaming, many people complain about not getting as much image and sound quality as they can if they continue buying movies in physical format. But Disney, although little by little, wants this to change. And the novelty that they will soon incorporate in the form of DTS:X sound will be the way in which they will give users what they want.

The alternative to Dolby Atmos sound

Right now the technology sector is completely investing in Dolby Atmos sound. It is what you have probably seen supported on most televisions and it is also what is seen the most on streaming platforms. And the truth is that it is, undoubtedly, one of the best ways to enjoy movies and series with the highest sound quality. But, as many experts assure, the sound provided by the DTS:X system surpasses that.

Disney+ movie with IMAX Enhanced technology

A few weeks ago, during CES, there were some specialists who were able to enjoy live a room that Disney+ had set up to test this sound quality with its streaming service. It is still something that has not been implemented globally and, at the moment, is not available to users, but it will end up arriving soon. Your impressions and those that appeared online a few days ago as a result of the latest DTS Craft Masters program, help us see more clearly the way in which this sound technology will have a strong impact on Disney+.

We still have a little time left for the DTS: thinking about purchasing a model that is already prepared for it. If you recently bought a new television and it does not support this codec, but does support Dolby Atmos, you also have nothing to worry about.

The idea that sound professionals have in mind is that possibly Smart TV brands will pay the corresponding licensing fees in order to incorporate support into their televisions. It will most likely depend on how Disney+ launches this sound technology and how its rivals in the streaming sector adopt it later. If the accounts work out, it is most likely that by 2025, DTS:X will have already become the sound trend sought by all movie lovers who enjoy streaming.

DTS:X sound is part of the IMAX Enhanced experience, which marks a turning point when it comes to enjoying the best image and sound quality when watching movies. It is, as experts define it, the best way to have a cinematic experience at home. Mainly, it is used in films that are available in IMAX, a catalog where, for example, productions from the Marvel universe stand out. That’s why it’s no surprise that the aforementioned DTS Craft Masters show focused in its latest episode on how IMAX enhances the Marvel cinematic universe.

DTS:X sound was already present in the Bravia Core service, which can be accessed on Sony brand Smart TVs. In addition, it is also a streaming platform that is available on the PlayStation 5 console, which opens up many possibilities for movie lovers. For now, Sony has already helped demonstrate the virtues of this sound, but due to its obvious exposure capacity, Disney+ will be the medium where it truly reaches a large number of users. When it is available it will be enabled in two dozen Marvel films that are certified with IMAX and available on Disney+. It will also be available in Lightyear, the Pixar film that tells us the space adventure of the intrepid Buzz.

However, the goal of Disney+, once it sees the results of supporting this type of sound, would be to add more compatible movies (possibly from the Pixar factory according to rumors). One of the possibilities, beyond upcoming releases, could be that they work with Sony to license some of their Bravia Core tapes so that they reach more users. It would not be something strange considering that the Japanese company does not have its own streaming service, so it is in a formidable position to enter into negotiations like this.

Doctor Strange movie with IMAX Enhanced indicator

This new sound option will be included under the full name of IMAX Enhanced signature sound by DTS and will be available on Android TVs from brands such as Sony, Xiaomi, Sharp or Hisense, as well as on AV sound devices from Sony, Denon, Marantz, JBL and Onkyo. It can also be enjoyed on IMAX speakers and sound bars from Definitive Technology, Philips or Polk Audio, among other manufacturers.

If the IMAX image as already available on Disney+ provides 26% more screen viewing through a 1.9:1 frame rate, what DTS:X sound will do is also improve it to match how theaters sound cinema. It is clear that it is going to be a change to take into account.
