DTS:X sound is part of the IMAX Enhanced experience, which marks a turning point when it comes to enjoying the best image and sound quality when watching movies. It is, as experts define it, the best way to have a cinematic experience at home. Mainly, it is used in films that are available in IMAX, a catalog where, for example, productions from the Marvel universe stand out. That’s why it’s no surprise that the aforementioned DTS Craft Masters show focused in its latest episode on how IMAX enhances the Marvel cinematic universe.
DTS:X sound was already present in the Bravia Core service, which can be accessed on Sony brand Smart TVs. In addition, it is also a streaming platform that is available on the PlayStation 5 console, which opens up many possibilities for movie lovers. For now, Sony has already helped demonstrate the virtues of this sound, but due to its obvious exposure capacity, Disney+ will be the medium where it truly reaches a large number of users. When it is available it will be enabled in two dozen Marvel films that are certified with IMAX and available on Disney+. It will also be available in Lightyear, the Pixar film that tells us the space adventure of the intrepid Buzz.
However, the goal of Disney+, once it sees the results of supporting this type of sound, would be to add more compatible movies (possibly from the Pixar factory according to rumors). One of the possibilities, beyond upcoming releases, could be that they work with Sony to license some of their Bravia Core tapes so that they reach more users. It would not be something strange considering that the Japanese company does not have its own streaming service, so it is in a formidable position to enter into negotiations like this.
This new sound option will be included under the full name of IMAX Enhanced signature sound by DTS and will be available on Android TVs from brands such as Sony, Xiaomi, Sharp or Hisense, as well as on AV sound devices from Sony, Denon, Marantz, JBL and Onkyo. It can also be enjoyed on IMAX speakers and sound bars from Definitive Technology, Philips or Polk Audio, among other manufacturers.
If the IMAX image as already available on Disney+ provides 26% more screen viewing through a 1.9:1 frame rate, what DTS:X sound will do is also improve it to match how theaters sound cinema. It is clear that it is going to be a change to take into account.
