As the years go by, the disk drives that are part of our computer or that we connect via USB are getting larger and larger. The problem is that the files we use are also larger, as is the case with photos or videos, for example.

Hence, we almost never have enough and on many occasions we have to use external drives such as USB flash drives or hard drives. These are an excellent complement to the internal disk drives that are part of our computer. But before getting to this point, we can also use some methods to use less disk space.

Surely many of you already know that multimedia content such as photos or videos are some of the files that take up the most space on these units. In these lines we want to focus on the photographic files that we sometimes store by the hundreds or thousands in these units that we are talking about.

And keep in mind that if we get used to carrying out some of the tricks that we will mention below, sometimes we can save a good amount of gigabytes. This is something that becomes especially evident if we work with a huge amount of photographic files. We must also take into consideration that the cameras on our phones that we usually use to take screenshots are getting better and better.

This means that their resolution is higher and therefore they take up much more space on our units once we transfer them to the PC. Below we show you some useful tips to reduce the size of these captures and save space.

Make your photos take up less space on your computer

You already know that the storage space on PC hard drives is not infinite, which is why sometimes we are forced to uninstall applications. It is also quite common for me to have to delete certain files or save them on external drives. Furthermore, this is another reason why cloud storage services are increasingly used.

Use the most appropriate format. We can find image files in multiple formats saved on our hard drive. But it is important to know that not everyone is the same. For example, we must avoid at all costs Photoshop RAW or PSD, which usually take up too much space. Hence, for example, converting these images to a JPEG format can save us an enormous amount of megabytes on the hard drive.

Reduces its resolution. Sometimes we take photos on our mobile with several megabytes, 15 or 20, of resolution natively. This makes the resulting files huge and, in most cases, unnecessary. Photos of this size are useful in professional editing work, but not for storage as keepsakes. Therefore, reducing their resolution will help us to make them take up much less space.

photo sizeEliminate duplicates. Surely it has happened to many of you on more than one occasion that you come across some photographic files repeated one or several times. Hence, deleting these duplicate photos will save us a good amount of disk space.

Configure your mobile camera. Over the years we increasingly acquire mobile phones that offer us a higher resolution camera with more megapixels. But it is not always necessary to take captures set to maximum. Hence, we can configure the terminal to use a lower resolution by default and thus save both on the mobile phone itself and when transferring them to the computer.
