AVM launches the new FRITZ!OS 7.90 in beta phase with important new features

The FRITZ!OS operating system that AVM has for its FRITZ!Box routers is one of the most complete and easy to use that we can find today. This version of FRITZ!OS 7.90 is one of the last before the launch of the future FRITZ!OS 8.00, which will be the “important” update for next year 2025 in all its models. Logically, version changes bring many improvements, but not a revolution, since FRITZ!OS does not need a revolution. Why change something from the root that works perfectly?

Internet

AVM has incorporated a list of IP addresses blocked against unwanted connection attempts, that is, it incorporates a blacklist with malicious IP addresses so that they cannot connect to our router using different protocols. Now AVM will be able to update these lists remotely and they will be automatically applied to the router, with the aim of protecting the security of its users. This feature is essential to avoid brute force or dictionary attacks on our router.

Another important change is related to the WireGuard VPN, and it now has support for the IPv6 protocol, and we can now transmit IPv6 data through the created tunnel without any problem. Now for VPN network connections via WireGuard, the fritz.box domain will work across the entire network. Another important change is that we can now specify remote site domains for DNS resolution. In the event that we have an error connecting to WireGuard, what error has occurred will now be provided in more detail. Regarding the IPsec VPN, they have also incorporated improvements, now it is faster, remote sites that support AES-GCM and AES-CCM, some obsolete algorithms have also been removed to improve security.

Wi-Fi and Mesh

Now the display of the Wi-Fi network in the home network has been improved, in the “Radio Channel” section we can see the usage during the last 7 days, perfect for seeing a recent history of everything that has happened. AVM has generally improved the router’s “Network Mesh” menu, perfect for a better user experience. Improved display details have also been incorporated into FRITZ! devices. that are configured in the Mesh network.

All Wi-Fi clients using guest access, we can assign our own names in the Mesh network overview graph, this feature is also extendable to main network devices, and that is we can change the names very easily and even assign icons to quickly recognize them.

Other improvements

In this new version of FRITZ!OS 7.90 we will have a specific log of problems and errors of the WAN/LAN connection, if you have IPv6 enabled on the local network, now the ULA IP addresses will be provided randomly following the RFC 4193 standard. Also The menus in the “Home Network / Network Connections” section have been redesigned. Other improvements introduced are that the “Transfer settings to a new FRITZ!Box” wizard has been optimized, because they are now adopted for the new router in the settings on the main page. The individual name that we have in the configured FRITZ!Box has also been incorporated into the file names. If you use the Push service to send us emails with different information, we have the possibility of establishing a personalized subject, this service has also been thoroughly reviewed to incorporate new features. Now communication to all AVM services in its cloud is done through IPv6, although IPv4 will also continue to be used as a backup.

QoS is a fundamental feature in home Wi-Fi routers, now the “Internet / Filters / Prioritization” section has been improved to make it fairer, and it will be responsible for automatically distributing the connection speed between the different devices.

Regarding telephony and DECT improvements, some improvements are higher voice quality (HD audio) for answering machine recordings, and also greater stability in phone calls, in addition, we can make up to 5 calls simultaneously ( Before they only allowed 3). If you use a FRITZ!Fon you will now be able to see the Wi-Fi access data on some phones and not on others, it is configurable through the firmware, other functions are that we can delete several emails simultaneously in the “delete several” option ». Now the home screen with the current weather on the street is available in Spain and other countries.

Other important news is that a series of errors or bugs in different firmware menus have been solved. AVM always takes advantage of each new version to solve or improve features that they have previously incorporated, there will always be some type of bug or unexpected operation, in any case, AVM firmwares are really reliable and there are very few failures, since they test very well each new version they release so that their clients do not have any operating problems, and that it does not affect the user experience.
