Apple has always boasted of being one of the companies that provides the greatest support to its users. Now, however, it has become known that it could be behind others like Samsung and Google. We tell you all the details.
Historically, the Apple user community has always been characterized by having a pupdate policy and support far above its main competitors.
However, as other companies such as Google and Samsung have made significant efforts in this direction, the gap between all technology companies has been reducing considerably. And, in fact, it has recently been learned that Apple could be behind both in the commitment to maintain security updates over time.
Apple’s commitment
Most mobile phone manufacturers offer their users official data regarding how long, at a minimum, updates are guaranteed. Both the operating system and those that refer to security. Aware that this is one of the main indicators that consumers monitor when evaluating the purchase of a terminal, in many cases we find policies that guarantee up to seven years of updates, as is the case in Samsung and Google.
Apple, however, has a completely different policy. Although it is true that in many cases its terminals receive updates for a long time, the Cupertino-based company has always preferred not to commit to announcing the minimum time for them. Now, however, it has been forced to steel as a result of the entry into force on April 29 of the UK’s Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regulation.
And, as is usual every time Apple has to comply with a legal framework, this has been the perfect time for us to learn more specifically Apple’s commitment with your users in your update policies.
Five years of updating
The technology company has announced that the defined support period is “a minimum of five years from the first date of supply”, not from the moment the purchase is made. In the case of the iPhone 15, the terminal’s release to the market occurred andl September 22, 2023. The previously mentioned legal framework defines a security update as “software update that protects or improves the security of a product, including a software update that addresses security issues that have been discovered by or reported to the manufacturer”.
It is worth keeping in mind that at all times we are referring to the security updates, not the operating system. In this case, Apple has not commented on the matter. As we have previously anticipated, companies like Samsung or Google guarantee seven years of security and operating system updates, two years more than what Apple would guarantee at least.
However, we are always talking about minimum commitment periods. So it would not be surprising that once five years have passed, Apple continues to offer support to its users for a while longer, as has happened on previous occasions.
