In the absence of E3, long live Gamescom! Video game lovers can already rub their hands together, because they have a bright future full of new products ahead of them. Like every summer, and becoming the best event of the year along with the Tokyo Game Show, Gamescom has started in style with an explosion of new products that has left no stone unturned.
Even though we’re on an overdose of Geoff Keighley, all of us who attended the Gamescom 2024 opening event are aware that the occasion is worth it. Trailer after trailer, talk after talk on stage, we’ve witnessed everything that makes gaming great and that keeps us glued in front of the TV with the controller in our hands. There were many new things shown at the event, but there are some that are worth reviewing.
The essentials
The event opened with the news of the upcoming 2025 release of Borderlands 4, bad timing considering the failure of its movie, but excellent given the eagerness of fans for a new game. Within seconds, no one has thought of the film. And that’s great news, since Gearbox Software intends to take us back to the world of the saga in style with a new story and protagonist.
And from start to finish, because the event closed with the presentation of Mafia: The Old Country. The 2K Games saga is not infallible and its games are not perfect, but each one of them has provided us with an enormous level of entertainment. Nothing can be faulted beyond bugs and some problems that, however, do not prevent Mafia games from always being among the top recommendations of the genre. The new episode will take us to Italy to explore the beginnings of the criminal organization that gives its name to the game.
In addition to these two great games, there are other titles that also shined at the event and which we will review more briefly to give you an idea of what is coming up in the coming months. Then we will tell you about the “hidden” gems from the start of Gamescom 2024.
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6: You might think it’s just “another Call of Duty,” but Activision’s series is a major name in the gaming industry. What was shown at the event It has given fans goosebumps and made it clear that we have a release ahead of us that is going to be pure spectacle.
- Goat Simulator Remastered: Admittedly, The trailer leads to confusion and that, while you’re watching it, you can expect anything except the return of the goat. But it must also be said that the game in question is going to celebrate its tenth anniversary in the best possible way. It may be too soon for a remaster, although who will say no to the goat?
- Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves: SNK continues to underline its importance in the market with the recovery of its sagas. And the Garou universe returns with Mai Shiranui confirming its presence in a trailer with which the company confirms that it will not make concessions and that fans can rest easy, because the ninja is back.
- Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: A must-have. Indy fans are in for a game that feels like it will satisfy players on all levels. Plus, it’s also announced that it’s coming to PlayStation 5 a few months after its Xbox release. It’s the new normal.
Hidden gems that will make history
Keep an eye out, because Gamescom 2024 is coming up big time. It has been announced that Marvel Rivals will be available with all its characters for free starting December 6th. Life has started to get complicated for those responsible for Overwatch 2, because the Marvel game looks tremendous. In addition, Batman: Arkham Shadow has been announced for Meta Quest 3 and, although it is virtual reality, at least the Arkham franchise is kept alive.
No less important is the triumphant return of the legendary Peter Molyneux, who can be forgiven for almost any mistakes he may have made in the past. The creator of titles such as Black & White or Fable returns with a game that has traces of his greatest classics and which he is paying for out of his own pocket. To do so, he has brought back many of the old-guard developers who worked with him previously. In Masters of Albion you will manage a medieval village in absolutely every aspect of it, you will train its inhabitants and, at night, you will be able to take control of it to defeat beings of darkness. It looks tremendous, and allows you to create swords with loaves of bread, which is a good demonstration of its wide freedom of options.
The creators of Little Nightmares have not only released a new trailer for the third installment, but they’ve also announced another game called Reanimal. And it’s going to be scarier than anything we’ve seen. Plus, it’ll also have co-op play. Although they’ve kept us on a bit of a leash for years, their return is going to be in style.
And finally, there are many other games that have been part of the event and that will be the stars in the coming days. Take note of some of them: Sid Meier’s Civilization 7, Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred (the first expansion), Monster Hunter Wilds (spectacular, as always), Dune: Awakening (which still has to convince more), Infinity Nikki, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage (from the creators of Life is Strange) or King of Meat (instant fun). What a Gamescom we have ahead of us and what a great 2024 and 2025 awaits us video game lovers!
