Although Microsoft has almost completely revamped its file explorer, it is still light years away from what users are looking for. Luckily, the community has created an alternative file explorer, completely free and open source, that surpasses the classic explorer in every aspect and that has more and more users: that’s Files.

Files is a completely free and open source file explorer that users can use to replace the classic Microsoft Explorer. This program offers many more functions, tools and possibilities than Microsoft Explorer itself, has a much more polished and refined interface, and is infinitely more stable than Microsoft Explorer itself.

Today, the developers of this program surprise us with a new version of it. This new version brings important new features and arrives in less than a month since the release of the previous one. Find out everything about the new Files 3.7.

Files 3.7: What’s New

One of the new features, much requested by users, is the possibility of deactivating the program icon that appears next to the clock. The developers added this function so that the program could always be at hand, but many users did not like it. Now, if you do not want to have it there, you can remove it without any problems.

Other new features found in this new version of the program are related to navigation. For example, the program is now able to change the focus to the current tab when an external program tries to access a directory that is already open. In addition, a new directory history has been added, which can be accessed by right-clicking on the program’s back or forward buttons.

The address bar has also been improved. For example, if we click on one of the arrows in the directories, we can see the entire tree to more quickly change to any previous folder. Also, within the program settings, the possibility of adding a start button to the interface, or creating a keyboard shortcut that takes us to it, has been added.

The program’s built-in compressor has also received a new feature, allowing you to specify how many CPU threads File can use when compressing files. A new “Flatten” feature has also been added, which allows you to extract all files from subfolders to a root folder of your choice, and better integration with Google Drive.

Finally, some animations that were causing problems in the program have also been removed, support for other clouds has been added, and a large number of bugs and errors have been corrected, both reported by users and detected by developers.

Download the program

This new version is now available for all users. To download it, all you have to do is go to the Microsoft Store and search for the new version directly in the Microsoft store. However, you should keep in mind that the app, within the store, costs almost 8 euros. This is used to finance the development and to continue improving the program.

If paying is not an option, don’t worry. On the official Files website you can download the program for free and install it on your computer without paying. The only difference is that you won’t be able to take advantage of the Store’s benefits, such as automatic updates.
