If you subscribe to Max, you have plenty of content to spare. You can count on a huge list of high-quality films, series and documentaries. Even though it is one of the platforms that does not appear on the list of favourites of the Spanish, the truth is that it includes the best productions of recent years. And, as usual, streaming rescues poorly received film releases to give them a second chance. Specifically, a failed horror film.
As is often the case, the numbers you expect when a film is released in cinemas around the world are not always as good as they seem. Because of this problem, many films are pulled from the box office in no time and some of them end up landing on streaming platforms. However, this is where they arouse the most interest, as it is precisely a release that has recently been on the big screen and that attracts people’s attention with the typical expression: “Hey, look! That one I wanted to see in the cinema just now…”
The film we are going to talk about below is a clear example of a production that was on track to be one of the best of the year, but which ultimately failed to meet expectations and ended up falling resoundingly into the void, being one of the biggest failures of 2024. Now, on Max, it is being crowned.
A thriller with psychological horror overtones that triumphs at Max
You’ve probably heard of M. Night Shyamalan, one of the most acclaimed directors of recent times with an enviable audiovisual library, such as The Sixth Sense, Signs or Trap. Well, the film we’re referring to has a lot to do with his surname, and it’s none other than the debut of his daughter Ishana Shyamalan with Watchmen.
In theaters it was a real flop, among other things, due to a poorly chosen date, given the tremendous blockbusters like Inside Out 2, which practically attracted the majority of the public during the past month of June. Therefore, its landing on streaming has occurred in just over two months, although it has been a complete success. This supernatural horror feature has positioned itself in second place of the most viewed films on Max, something that was never expected due to its low box office takings.
This story, starring Dakota Fanning and produced by Shyamalan himself, takes place in an Irish forest inhabited by strange creatures. When a young woman named Mina goes into the depths of the forest to find help after her car breaks down, she comes across an old woman who warns her of the danger of her presence there, as the appearance of nocturnal beings, known as the Watchers, stalk them every night. Mina will be led to a bunker where she will meet other people who are sheltered and will have to fight to survive.
The premise certainly sounds interesting, and if you get a chance to see the film, you’ll be able to make up your own mind. Watchmen is available on Max from August 30.
