Sync Apple Music library

Use the Sync Library feature to stream your music library on any device signed in with the same Apple ID. This is the Apple ID with which you are subscribed to Apple Music. If you don’t see the ‘Sync Library’ option, this could be due to two reasons: your subscription has expired or your device is not signed in with the correct Apple ID. If you are not a subscriber, you will have to synchronize your music library manually.

Sync Apple Music with your Mac

That is how it works:

  1. Open the Music app on your Mac.
  2. Select ‘Account’ from the menu bar and check whether you are logged in with the correct Apple ID.
  3. Choose Music > Settings and go to the General tab.
  4. Select Sync Library and press OK.

After you turn on Sync Library on your Mac, PC, iPhone, or iPad, you can stream your music library on any device with the Apple Music app. Of course, you must be logged in with the correct Apple ID. You can also access your music library at music.apple.com.

If syncing is not working properly

Apple has a number of tips you can go through if songs are missing or if syncing isn’t working properly. But that does not always provide a solution.

In January 2024, several users reported problems with syncing your Apple Music library. Some people lose hundreds of hours of self-made playlists as a result. Users cannot add new music to their library and previously added music will no longer appear. Some users may only see a message in the Music app on desktop warning them that the Genius results cannot be updated. Others also have problems on their iPhone or iPad, making the music library inaccessible. There are several complaints on the Apple Support pages and on Reddit, making it clear that this is a widespread problem.

There is no solution yet and Apple has not yet responded. It may help to sign out of iCloud, change your password, then sign back in. However, this does not appear to work for everyone.
