Over the last few years, many attackers have been using different streaming platforms, both video and music, to try to deceive us. They are called phishing campaigns with which they try to obtain our personal data and steal our money.

These types of techniques have been used for decades, and now they take advantage of these widespread online services. In fact, right now we are going to focus on a new campaign that has been detected and that tries to deceive us through Max, the popular movie and series streaming service.

It must be taken into account that many of these platforms only increase their subscription price, so tempting us with supposed offers that appear can be excellent bait. This is precisely the case at hand, since apparently we will have the possibility of subscribing for 1 full year to the aforementioned Max, paying only two euros.

At first glance it may seem like an unrejectable offer, but if we think about it carefully it is too good to be true. In reality, it is a new phishing campaign that has now appeared after the change from HBO Max to Max. But we must keep in mind that the only purpose of that email that we receive in our account is to steal our money through deception.

How phishing impersonating Max works

Obviously, the email that reaches our account has all the necessary elements to try to deceive us. Its appearance is similar to that used by legitimate video streaming platform, including logos, images, colors and fonts. Attach an offer, as we mentioned, to subscribe to the online service for 2 euros for 12 months.

But of course, in order to benefit from this supposed offer that we are telling you about, we will have to fill out a series of personal data through a website to which we are redirected. As it could not be otherwise, this page is false and, among other personal information, the banks ask us to be able to charge us said fee. In this way, once we have bitten, the attackers receive the data entered and can do whatever they want with it.

Of course we are not going to receive any type of subscription nor will we be able to access Max’s content for that attractive price.

Protecting ourselves from these online scams is easy

With this, what we want to tell you is that we should be alert if we receive an email with these characteristics. The first thing we should do is send it to the spam folder. Furthermore, to make sure that it really is a scam, we only have to take a look at the website where the personal data that we must provide is requested. Here we realize that this is a hoax, since the URL provided does not belong to the video platform.

At the same time we must be wary of all these offers that are too flashy to be true. Be that as it may, filling out forms with our private data, including banking information, through an email or an SMS that reaches our mobile phone, is never the most advisable thing.
