We can say that there are many social networks on the Internet. There are different types, since some are more focused on uploading content, others on searching for information or also on maintaining contact with friends and family. If there is a well-known platform, it is X (formerly Twitter, although many will continue to call it that). In recent days, a lot of information related to Bluesky has appeared. It is an alternative to X and has grown a lot in users. But how does it treat privacy?

The idea of this article is to focus on a very important aspect in social networks: privacy. Does it improve anything on X in this regard? We are going to show what appears in Bluesky’s privacy policy, so that you have more information when choosing to use or not use this social network if what you want is to protect your data.

Bluesky Privacy

X (or Twitter) needs little introduction. It is a platform where we can post short messages and reach our contacts, as well as others through retweets, hashtags, etc. Blueky we can say that it is a carbon copy, since it is very similar in terms of operation. It is not new, since it has existed for a few years, but it is now that it seems that many users are getting to know it. In fact, even the logo is reminiscent of Twitter’s old blue bird.

They promote themselves as a decentralized social network. At first, it emerged as a part of Twitter. It is now a completely independent platform. But why is it in the center of news now? After the US elections, many X users decided to switch to this platform. In fact, they have gained over a million users in a matter of days. But we don’t just have to stay with these last few days, and in recent months they have gone from 9 million to 15 million users.

One of the reasons for this boom is the increase in misinformation on X. Many users believe that it has become a less reliable platform than it was before, with many profiles that show false information and that have a great impact. Now, if we focus on privacy, the truth is that there are no differences.

Leave your cell phone with greater privacy

Bluesky, on their privacy policies page, indicate that the data is stored by the platform and that they can sell it to third parties, for example for marketing campaigns. Basically, the same thing that many other social networks do. Therefore, in that sense we do not see that there is an improvement and the user is still the product.

Additionally, another point to keep in mind is that they indicate that they can keep users’ personal information for as long as necessary. They even indicate that they can transfer users’ personal information internationally.

Therefore, in our opinion, Bluesky is nothing more than another social network like many others available, in terms of privacy. It is a platform that can collect personal data and information that we publish, to sell it to third parties. This means that, at least in terms of privacy, they do not improve on X.
