Catalonia accelerates the expansion of its public fiber optic network, to continue connecting public centers and institutions in the different municipalities, and ensure connectivity in places with less presence of private telecos.
The Catalan government has announced that it is proposed as a goal for the current legislature to carry the public fiber optic network to 100% of municipalities, achieving a total of 738 connected municipalities (78%) at the end of 2025. This implies an increase In the 1,400 kilometers network, thus exceeding 8,000.
For this, autonomy has authorized an investment of 91.5 million euros for this 2025, which raises the accumulated investment from the beginning of the project to more than 300 million euros.
Since the beginning of the current legislature, the deployment of about 1,000 km new from the network has been completed, which has allowed connecting another 82 municipalities. Today, there are already 6,700 km and 618 municipalities (65% of the total) connected to the infrastructure, as indicated by the Government of Catalonia.

Public optical fiber serves to connect centers of public institutions, from municipalities to schools and health centers, as well as to reach corners to those who do not arrive private telecommunications companies. From the Government they want to connect essential public infrastructure and “offer an accessible network to private operators to provide connectivity services in areas where the market does not arrive naturally.”
With all this, the Government marks an “ambitious” objective: to send an access point to this high -speed network 100% of the Catalan municipalities this legislature. It is estimated that for each euro invested in this infrastructure, the company will receive a return of 12.85 euros.
Collaboration with private company
From the Catalan executive they point out that his intention is to contribute, in the framework of the central government plan, to economic and social development in conjunction with private companies. Therefore, they will continue working so that operators can use this public network infrastructure to “get their services to the entire country, increase the robustness of the network and facilitate rapid management, transparent communication and an agile reaction to incidents and breakdowns ».
