Telephone users in Spain will finally feel that their complaints have been heard. The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Function, Óscar López, has announced in an interview this Thursday that he will approve a ministerial order before finishing February to stop the so -called fraudulent ones that have become routine for a large part of the Citizens
The set of measures included in this order, of which details were already known a few months ago, will include the prohibition of making commercial calls from number with prefix other than 800 or 900, as well as a registration of numbers in the National Market Commission and the Competition (CNMC) to supervise who has permission to send commercial messages.
If a non -compliance is detected by a company, it may be denounced in the Office of Consumer Attention of Telecommunications and sanctions may be imposed, as indicated by the politician. “There is a lot to do, you don’t have to stay with a crossed arms, you have to act,” López said in the Rac1 station.
One of the most used forms by cybercriminals to perpetrate scams is that of the impersonation of identity of organizations and companies. Someone calls us on the phone from an unknown phone, and tells us that it is from our bank, of the gas company, or even the health center, and a alibi is invented to get our personal data.
The measure proposed by López will not be a radical change since scammers can continue to call us freely. But it represents a very important improvement, since it implies that, as of March, all users know that if they receive a number that does not start by 800 or 900, and someone claims to be a commercial of a company or a mobile operator , we will know instantly that it is a lie. This will allow the citizen to hunt the scam attempts faster, before it is too late.
However, the problem of supplanting numbers also comes into play, and there are technologies to camouflage behind a false number. It remains to be seen to what extent the criminals will be able to modify the visible call number and impersonate an 800 or 900.

This measure will benefit Spanish users, although probably, it is not enough to end the justified customer complaints. The scammers are often capable of changing number very quickly, calling each time from a different number and making efforts to block these calls by those who suffer them.
Lopez’s measure will not prevent criminal calls from entering, but it will serve as an additional security layer to distrust certain calls.
