The consumer protection organisation Facua has launched an initiative aimed at tracking and monitoring the price movements of basic foodstuffs in different supermarkets. At the moment it only shows a record of the prices of olive oil, sunflower oil and milk, although it is expected to incorporate more essential products over time.

In the context of a year of inflation in which olive oil prices have skyrocketed, information on price changes in large stores can be very useful for consumers to better choose which supermarket or brand they want to use.

Since the last harvest has been more profitable, oil prices are falling slightly, but this new portal will allow us to know exactly how much they are falling in supermarkets, giving a more precise idea of the extent to which improvements in performance in the field are passed on to the end customer.

The tool is called ‘Super Facua‘, and obtains prices from the chains’ websites. “Please note that there are supermarkets that apply different prices depending on their location. The data we offer you are those shown by default on the websites of the analysed chains, without entering any postal code,” the organisation reports.

The website is tracking the basic products mentioned above in 6 supermarkets: Mercadona, Carrefour, Eroski, Dia, Hipercor and Alcampo. In addition, on its main screen you can see price changes in three categories:

  • The products that have increased the most in price today
  • Biggest price increases in the last 7 days
  • Biggest price increases in the last 30 days

By clicking on any specific product, we can see its price history, with a line graph and a table showing the exact price in euros and the percentage increase or decrease per day.

At the time of writing this, the products that have increased the most in price in the last month are Puleva milk packs at Alcampo (76% more expensive), Coosur extra virgin olive oil at Eroski (52% more), and Carbonell olive oils at Hipercor (47% increase).

Price comparators

Facua is not the only price comparison site out there. Other mobile apps or websites such as Soysuper, Ofertia, Lessy, OcuMarket, FindItApp or Tiendeo also offer information on tickets at different supermarkets.

We also remember that to save money in supermarkets, it is useful to download their official mobile applications. The chain stores Dia, Carrefour or Lidl, for example, have their own mobile apps, and by entering the QR code of our account when we go through the checkout we can automatically get discounts. We can also participate in raffles or other promotions, or check which products are on sale that week.

If we have a particular establishment that we usually go to more often, we can check if it has an app or a membership plan that might interest us to accumulate points or discounts with each purchase.
