Microsoft is making a big effort to include AI in Windows 11, a feature that requires you to change your computer if you want to use it. On the other hand, other elements seem forgotten, without any substantial improvements for years, such as the “File Explorer”. Well, the Files 3.6 software has been updated with a dual panel, a new actions menu and other changes.

File Explorer has not undergone any significant changes since it was practically developed. Most of the changes are cosmetic, and do not include any significant changes in terms of its functionality or capabilities.

Many users have been using third-party applications for some time now, which have positioned themselves as an alternative due to all the capabilities they offer. These applications offer many more organizational, optimization and customization capabilities. Among them, Files software stands out, which has just been updated with interesting improvements.

What’s new in Files 3.6

You should know that this program is open source and completely free. You can download it free of charge from its official website or by paying 8.99 euros in the Microsoft StoreThe money is used to continue maintaining the software, adding new features and functions.

Files 3.6 comes with improvements to the dual panel, where we can change the orientation from vertical to horizontal, as well as adjust its layout when using the dual panel.

It includes a special button in the top left corner of the UI, somewhat similar to Microsoft Edge’s “Tab Actions” feature. We will have quick access to common actions such as opening new windows, compact overlay, and other features.

A very interesting feature is the ability to set custom backgrounds for each folder. This allows you to quickly differentiate between different folders and have special backgrounds for folders containing photos, documents, workspaces, etc. This includes the ability to specify background opacity and alignment per folder.

They note that the app is now 167% faster at loading folders containing thousands of items. It should be noted that the performance improvement depends on the system hardware and which applications are running in the background.

On the other hand, a keyboard shortcut has been added to toggle the visibility of the toolbar which is “Ctrl + Shift + B”. In addition, a keyboard shortcut is added to move the focus between panels in dual panel mode as is “Ctrl + Shift + Right”

Support is also included for clicking links when previewing Markdown files, and an action is added to toggle the Markdown file setting.

It also includes a long list of troubleshooting tips, of which we are going to leave you the most important ones:

  • Fixed empty tab title when opening a folder in a new tab.
  • Fixed dragging or unloading multiple items being used in the wrong sorting mode.
  • Fixed a problem opening the start page when starting files with custom arguments.
  • Fixed issue where resizing layout did not work when responsive layout was enabled.
  • Patched an issue where uncached windows sometimes had the wrong theme.
  • Fixed issue where settings were not exported in the correct format.
  • Reduced the sensitivity that made renaming a folder difficult.
  • Fixed issue where inline files were downloaded when loading tooltips.
  • Fixed an issue with file compression and extraction on ARM64 devices.

These are the most notable corrections, although there are many more. If you want to see them all, you can We leave the link where they are all detailed.
