Those who use Maps the most in their daily lives will appreciate this feature, which should reach all users soon. Being able to see the map in 3D while following the marked route can help you better recognize the elements around you.

Although it was already possible to view a city map with three-dimensional buildings in layer form, the application has now introduced the possibility of viewing in 3D while using the map to guide you to a destination. This novelty joins a long list of new features that the technology company has been introducing over the last year.

Android expert @AssembleDebug shared a screenshot this Tuesday in which you can see a new option to show buildings in 3D during navigation. This, in version 125 of the Google Maps beta. As usually happens, this new function will most likely reach all users soon after being tested for a while in the beta.

The 3D layer offered so far by the Google navigation app shows the planes with only a basic layer of 3D geometry, without including more detailed textures. Therefore, it would be foreseeable that this new option offers this same type of graphics.

«Google Maps has added the ‘Show buildings in 3D’ option during navigation. It has been in testing for some time. Google Maps beta version 125 makes it available to everyone. It was already possible to view 3D buildings in the normal map view via the layer option,” explains @AssembleDebug.

This function can make navigation with Maps more indicative, by giving the user a slight idea of the height of the buildings they are passing.

This novelty adds to those previously implemented by Google in recent months, such as real-time electric car battery information, the inclusion of weather and air quality icons, and other improvements powered by artificial intelligence.

Towards a more immersive technology

The new function is just another extra to the work already done by Google to make its Maps application as complete as possible. In 2023, its ‘Immersive View’ tool arrived in Spain, with which it was also possible to see buildings in three dimensions.

Using hundreds of different images of the same building, Google was able to build multidimensional scenes of emblematic buildings, a very interesting feature for tourists, for example. In addition, it is possible to see what the same construction would look like in different weather conditions or at different times of day.

Google’s idea is also to be able to show the interiors of as many monuments or buildings as possible, so that the user can decide whether it is worth visiting or not or to find out the most accessible entrance to a site. It does all this in combination with Street View, which offers a view from the street as if it were someone walking through that same place.
