The Max streaming platform will soon arrive in Spain to replace HBO Max, as the company has announced through its X account. It was already available in other countries, but the rollout in Europe will begin this spring. Why is Warner Bros changing the name of this service again? Next, we tell you the differences between HBO Max and the new Max.
It’s official, HBO Max is preparing the launch of its successor in our country. As confirmed on his X account (formerly Twitter), Max’s arrival in Spain will be on May 21. Although we still have to wait a little longer for Spaniards to be able to enjoy this service, we already know the date and we can learn what this new service will be like based on the experience in other countries.

What advantages will Max have?
The HBO Max replacement arrived in the United States in May 2023 and has also been deployed in other countries in recent months. Finally, a year after its official launch, we will have it available in Spain and other European countries.
The main difference between HBO Max and Max will be that the catalog of series and movies from the former will join the Discovery+ catalog in the latter. This implies that, among other things, sports can be consumed on the Warner Bros. platform.
That modification causes Max’s plans to change slightly. Specifically, starting in May, there will be a supplement for all basic plans for sports. Likewise, they will add three plans (one of them with ads, something that other platforms, such as Netflix or Disney+, have already done).
Max’s plans
The company details the selection of plans that Max will offer for subscribers. Until now, we only had one plan, which could be paid monthly or annually. Now, there will be a standard plan, a premium plan, a basic plan with ads and a sports add-on that can be added to any plan. The characteristics of each one will be the following:
- Standard plan: up to two simultaneous devices, Full HD resolution and up to 30 content downloads to watch offline.
- Premium plan: up to four simultaneous devices, Full HD or 4K resolution, with Dolby Atmos sound, and up to 100 content downloads to watch offline.
- Basic plan with ads: up to two simultaneous devices and Full HD resolution. It includes advertising, it will be available first in nine European countries before expanding to others (it will take a while to arrive in Spain).
- Sports Extra: coverage for major sporting events. The availability of rights and content varies by country and sports content can be viewed on up to two devices at the same time.
Prices for these plans have not yet been confirmed.
New catalog available exclusively for Max
The launch of Max in Europe will be followed by the second season of The House of the Dragon, HBO’s original series from the Game of Thrones universe. According to a press release, it will premiere on June 17.
In addition, this summer it will offer content from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The competitions of the biggest sporting event of the year will be enabled for viewing in all subscription plans.
In the sporting field, Spaniards will be able to enjoy other competitions, such as the tennis Grand Slams, such as the Australian Open, Roland-Garros; the three Grand Tours of cycling: the Giro d’Italia, the Tour of Spain and the Tour de France, etc.
There will also be a wide range of entertainment that we already enjoyed on HBO Max and Discovery+. Some of the most notable titles are Barbie, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Wonka, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, Euphoria, True Detective: Polar Night, The Regime The Sympathizer, the second season of The Jinx and the new comedy The Franchise.
