The Big Tech will invest over the next 10 years more than 24,000 million euros. Companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and Google, among others, need to expand their global data center networks to meet the needs that new technologies require.
The growth in demand for digital content and services, migration to the cloud and expansion that Artificial Intelligence has experienced over the last few years have been three of the key ingredients. The movements that this market is experiencing have caused the need to invest in our country to position it as an important digital node in Europe, as reported by ExpansiĂłn.
New mega data centers
One of the central axes on which these investments will focus is the construction of new mega data centers of up to 1 GW, compared to the current range that is between 50 and 200 MW. This movement is a consequence of the high workloads that Artificial Intelligence currently requires to continue working.
With the numbers handled by the strategic consulting firm Bain & Company, the cost of constructing these infrastructures would be between 10,000 and 25,000 million dollars for the next five years. Current spending is between 1,000 and 4,000 million dollars.
The demand for electricity is reaching such high levels that some of the companies already mentioned are turning to nuclear energy to supply the demand for their systems.
88% more investment compared to 2023
Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta and Oracle have planned spending slightly more than $290 billion in 2025. If we compare these numbers with those recorded in 2023, we find a growth of 88%.
Amazon Web Services, For its part, it will invest 15.7 billion over the next 10 years to develop a complex of four data centers in Aragon. Microsoft, For its part, it will invest more than 6.6 billion in a complex also in Aragon that will be specifically designed to cover all the demands required by Artificial Intelligence applications.
Meta will build a campus in Talavera de la Reina worth 750 million, once it has received the green light to begin the project. While Oracle is working on a 10-year project that will help it open its third cloud region in Spain in collaboration with TelefĂłnica in an investment of 930 million.
Furthermore, Big Tech are not the only ones that have placed Spain as one of the key objectives in their next investments. Operators are also concentrating their investments in our country to rent their centers to host servers, data and all types of interconnection services. The business volume is estimated at 600 million in 2027.
