My friends never turn off their phones, but they should for several reasons

After some conversations with friends, I have realized that many people never turn off their mobile phone. This makes sense, since there is no real need to do it, but it still surprises me, because turning it off from time to time is standard practice for me.

I usually have my smartphone always on during the week, but I try to turn it off at night on weekends, for example, or at least every night before a day when I don’t have to get up early or work.

Although I usually think that this is how I am letting my phone rest, that is not really the case. Thinking that turning off your phone is good or bad for the battery would be incorrect in both senses. Smartphone manufacturers design them precisely so that they can always be permanently on, so turning it off to “let it rest” is not an argument.

Psychological rest

In reality, (and this is more personal) letting my phone rest acts in my case more like a psychological placebo, since by turning off the phone, I feel that I am somehow completely disconnecting from thoughts about social networks, news or other things. stories.

Also, just before turning off the phone, I close all the apps that may be running in the background. This is another thing that people forget to do, and that foolishly consumes battery and CPU resources. Being used to doing both things at the same time, turning it off helps me remember to close all the apps that do not have to be operating or extracting data at that moment.

Charging mobile battery risks and dangers

In my case I do it because, although I usually have the phone in silent mode, it will normally vibrate or the screen will light up if I have a call or notification, and this is enough to bother me while I sleep, or distract me if I am doing something. another activity like reading. Yes, just seeing the screen light up will give me some anxiety due to the uncertainty of what that notification is.

Protection against malware

This may be nonsense to many, but be careful, because there is a second reason, and it is not mine, but rather explained by the American Security Agency (NSA). In a study that the organization shared a few months ago, the NSA warned that turning your phone off and on again, at least once a week, was beneficial to avoid the presence of possible malware.

This is because there are certain threats, such as attacks spear phishing (selective phishing) or zero-click exploits that can cause effects on the phone if they reach it. However, their weak code means that they are not able to adhere to the system, so a simple shutdown or restart eliminates them as if nothing had happened. Yes, it is an extreme case, but it is one more reason to turn off your cell phone from time to time.
