After the update sent to Nintendo Switch consoles this June 10, a new era begins away from Twitter for the main companies in the video game sector.
General Twitter blackout on the main consoles on the market. The transition of Twitter from Jack Dorsey to Elon Musk has not sat well with the API on gaming stations. Although the connection with Twitter, now
Microsoft and Sony stopped supporting the Twitter API on their consoles last year. Now, the disconnection between Switch and the social network thanks to this update marks the end of X’s presence in the three largest companies in the sector.
Nintendo broke the news on last month, without offering details about what has led them to stop offering the connection with the social network. Users will no longer be able to share tweets from their Switch, nor upload screenshots of their gameplay to the platform.
It is possible that this list of disconnections has to do with the changes in the API access conditions announced by the social network in March of last year. Among them was a price increase, raising the rate for business customers to $42,000 per month. Other platforms such as Slack or Jetpack (WordPress) have also stopped offering integration with X.
At the same time, these platforms continue to offer integration with Facebook, for example, for whatever reason or another, it seems to be a specific problem with the new API terms of use that has caused all of these platforms to stop offering the integration. Neither Microsoft nor Sony have given any explanations, but statements from other platforms may give some clue.
For example, Jetpack reported: «Twitter decided, with short notice, to drastically change the terms and prices of the Twitter API. We have attempted to work with Twitter in good faith to negotiate new terms, but have been unable to reach an agreement. As a result, the Twitter connection in Jetpack Social will no longer work and your blog posts will no longer be automatically shared on Twitter.
Twitter’s new address causes problems
All this suggests that the new policy promoted under the direction of Elon Musk has not sat well not only with console manufacturers, but with many other different platforms in general. Other companies that also abandoned the integration with X are the news network Flipboard, the content manager Feedhive, Blizzard (World of Warcraft) and Microsoft Advertising. For Musk, the API price increase would predictably be based on the need to increase the company’s profits. For detractors of the new X, this is just another entry on the list of broken ones that Musk has left in his wake since he took over the company.
