One good and one bad for DTT: La 1 reigns as audience leader and June is already the worst month in history

DTT is experiencing lower television consumption than in other years, mainly due to the rise of streaming platforms, which provide alternative entertainment for thousands of users. In Spain, the low audience levels became more evident during the pandemic, which have continued to decline to this day. In fact, despite RTVE topping the charts for the highest audience, the truth is that June has been the month with the worst results in history.

Television viewing habits have changed radically. The reasons are clear: since streaming applications entered the audiovisual field with the aim of revolutionizing the television market, many viewers have begun to enjoy delayed or on-demand content, and the Internet has also contributed to the spread of hybrid consumption through mobile devices.

Pay-TV platforms in Spain seem to reflect a less than illuminating future for DTT, as it has been proven that the public prefers to adapt to another type of consumption after the audiovisual consultancy GECA has launched in its latest report a clear drop in audience figures during the month of June.

RTVE, audience leader

In a bittersweet moment for DTT, public television continues to command the highest percentage of audiences. An analysis by the consultancy GECA confirms that La 1 is in first place with a 12.7% share, adding its best monthly figure since 2012 (12.8%). Meanwhile, Antena 3 achieves 12.4%, a figure that harms it, as it drops one position with almost one point less share and records its worst June in the last four years. Telecinco consolidates the next position, dropping five tenths, with a 10% share and signing its worst month in history.

FDF and Energy lead the group of subchannels of the Mediaset DTT group. On the one hand, FDF (2.5%) drops two tenths, but Energy (2.3%) adds three tenths, becoming the thematic channel that grew the most in June.

As for pay-TV channels, Eurosport is the one that takes the cake, experiencing the biggest growth of the month with a 0.40% share.

The 1st leader in audience

The Eurocup, the most watched programme

La 1’s numbers are soaring thanks to the broadcast of the Euro 2024 in Germany, which is currently in first place with 3 million viewers. The match between Spain and Georgia is currently dominating the ranking of the most watched programmes in the month of June, with almost 10 million viewers.

Consequently, the most watched delayed shows continue to be MasterChef, followed by La Promesa and Segunda Muerte, the latter currently airing on Movistar Plus+.

June is the worst month in history

The GECA report verifies that June is classified as the worst month of television consumption in the history of DTT, with 161 minutes on average, which represents a drop of 10 minutes compared to June 2023, which was the period that had these results.

After gathering all this data, we are faced with a dilemma regarding whether DTT is becoming the second choice for viewers, since it has been seen that, in order to increase its audience, it is necessary to reinforce programming.
