Netflix reinvents the classic game of Minesweeper for its subscribers

The streaming platform Netflix is keen to differentiate itself from other audiovisual entertainment services in every possible way. Unlike Max, Disney+ or SkyShowtime, this company also wants to get fully involved in the world of video games. Its subscribers have access to more than 50 exclusive games for mobile phones and some for computers. In its catalogue, there are some completely new titles and others that are adaptations of classics, such as Minesweeper.

The legendary game of Minesweeper has been around for over 30 years. The game’s gameplay is very simple: the player must clear a minefield without detonating any. Some squares have a number indicating the number of mines around them. In this way, the user can be quick-witted and try to complete the game instead of leaving everything to chance.

Until Windows 8, Minesweeper was pre-installed on our computers. However, now we have to resort to the Internet, or download it ourselves, to enjoy this great classic. Recently, Netflix has decided to bring it to the mobile screens of its subscribers. The streaming platform version is already available on iOS and Android.

Differences between the original Minesweeper and the Netflix version

The goal of Netflix’s Minesweeper is the same as the original version. Therefore, it is a good option if you want to have a good time while training your mind. However, if there is something worth highlighting about the option offered by the platform, it is the graphics.

The Minesweeper we are used to has a very simple interface. It only shows a grey box with different squares that represent the boxes. When you click on them, a bomb, a blue 1, a green 2 or a red 3 appear. You can also place red flags where you think there are mines, but little else.

Minesweeper original game

The Netflix version, on the other hand, reinvents what we know as the legendary Minesweeper. While the gameplay is the same, the graphics are much more attractive. There are various levels, in various locations, such as Hawaii, Japan and Australia. In addition, as we play we will get illustrated stamps, stickers and posters to fill an album and complete the collection.

If you search the Google Play Store or App Store, you’ll find dozens of results that imitate the original model. However, none of them innovate beyond the colors. Instead, Netflix has wanted to give the game a twist so that you search for mines in different locations, making it more attractive for those who pay for a subscription to its streaming platform. It also doesn’t have ads and you don’t have to pay any additional fees other than the Netflix rate.

Whether you’ve played the original Minesweeper or it’s your first time, Netflix makes it easy to really learn how to play. At the beginning, you’ll be shown a very detailed tutorial (which you can skip if you’re already an expert). Plus, the interface allows you to zoom, tilt, and switch between marking and revealing tiles, which makes it easy to play.

Minesweeper Netflix game

If you want to start a game and leave it halfway through, Netflix Minesweeper will automatically save your game. That way, when you return to the app, you can resume the game or choose to start a new one. This makes it easier to play only when you have some downtime and not distract from your obligations. You won’t have to play right now and you can leave it for later without losing the progress you’ve made.

Until a few hours ago, the game was not available in Spanish and could only be played in English, according to some Spanish media. However, at ADSLZone, we have been able to try it out and have discovered that it has finally been translated. The beginning of Netflix Minesweeper takes us to Easter Island. But the game will take you to many more locations so that playing with Netflix is more special than doing it with any other app.
