The International Mobile Equipment Identity, better known by its acronym IMEI, is a unique code for our mobile phone. It is something like when users use their fingerprint to identify themselves. Through this identifier, we can easily report the theft or loss of the device, allowing the deactivation of the system. Orange recently shared the importance of the IMEI and explained how its customers could easily consult it.
The IMEI code is a unique code, so each smartphone has one that is different from any other in the world. It also has other names, such as MEID, ESN or serial number, but there is no device that does not have it. With it, it is easier to distinguish between one mobile phone and another even if they are the same model. Orange compares this to “the chassis number of the car: there are no two devices with the same reference.”
Although not all users do this, Orange recommends that its customers check the 15-digit identification number of their device. This is a very simple process to carry out and can be very useful in case of loss.
Ways to check the IMEI
Regardless of whether you are an Orange customer or not, you can check the IMEI number of your mobile phone on the box it came in, or on the purchase invoice. Manufacturers usually add it to the packaging to make it easier to have on hand. However, checking the IMEI can be more complicated if you have thrown away the receipt and the smartphone packaging.
For that reason, from Orangegive other possible solutions. An alternative is to check the code on the SIM card tray. Usually, the number is printed there. If it is not there, take a look at the battery (provided you can open the device and remove it easily).
The third way to check the IMEI is from the mobile settings. In Android models, the identifier is found in Settings > Phone information > Status > IMEI information. While in the iOS operating system we must go to Settings > General > Information > IMEI.
As Orange indicates, another option is to dial the code *#06# in the Phone app. Some phones will display the IMEI digits directly, while others will force you to press the call button. But don’t worry, Orange won’t charge you for this action. This feature is also available with other operators, so you can try it if you’re not a customer of the orange brand.
What is IMEI for?
Now we know how to find out the IMEI number of a smartphone, but… what is its use? Orange explains why we should save the 15 unique digits of our device, since they can be useful in different situations:
- Blocking a stolen phone. If someone has taken your phone, the best thing you can do is call Orange (or whatever operator you use) to ask them to block it from the network. This way, the thief won’t be able to use it, even if he changes SIM cards.
- Finding a lost phone. It doesn’t always happen, but there are operators that offer phone tracking services by IMEI.
- Request a warranty. Some teleoperators ask for this ID to manage a warranty for the mobile device.
- Unlocking a phone. In case you want to use your phone with another operator, there are times when you will be asked for the IMEI to unlock it.
- Identify the phone model. There are websites that verify the model and manufacturer of a smartphone using the IMEI. This is very useful if you have bought the cheapest device on AliExpress or Miravia and want to make sure that it is the one you ordered and that you have not been scammed. For example, there is the website imei.info.
