The latest data published on the streaming market in Spain confirms that Prime Video remains unrivalled in our country. For 17 consecutive months, the streaming platform has remained the leader in a sector that, however, continues to grow and change. Above all, it is clear that there are more and more platforms trying to break into the top 10.

With data from the audience measurement and research agency SigmaDos30 in hand for the month of June 2024, we can see that, as we say, Prime Video is leading. Amazon’s platform is in a solid first position even though its market share percentage has dropped slightly in the last month. However, that of its main rival, Netflix, has also declined.

A very intense top 10

As we have indicated, Prime Video has been the leader for 17 months. Compared to May, its share has gone from 74.7% to 73.5%. In the case of Netflix, the platform has also dropped, going from 71.4% to 70.7%. According to the agency’s data, Prime Video is the leader, above all, in the segment of users who are over 29 years old.

Of course, it’s obvious that Prime Video has a very high user base, partly because the service is integrated with Amazon’s Prime subscription. This has always been one of the platform’s winning points over its competitors. It’s also true that Netflix is lagging behind and is in a very close second position. According to statistics, the segment in which Netflix leads is the one made up of users between 16 and 29 years old.

A mix of series and movies from Amazon Prime Video

Continuing with the top, Disney+ remains the third in contention, although with a market figure very far from that of the two leading platforms. Thus, although Disney’s service has been the third platform for 14 months, it does so with a penetration share of 33.9%. This also represents a drop compared to May, when it had 34.5%. These changes are due, above all, to the way in which the market is opening up to more and more streaming platforms, so in a way they are understandable.

The following positions are occupied by Max with 28.7%, Movistar Plus+ with 21.1%, RTVE Play with 18.7% and Atresplayer with 14%. What is clear is that Max is aiming to take third place, something that it may achieve now that it has launched itself fully into sport with Eurosport and is hosting Olympic Games content. Rounding out the top 10 are DAZN, Pluto TV and SkyShowtime, the latter falling below 10%.

What have been the most successful contents?

Although Prime Video is the number one platform, when it comes down to it, Netflix often takes the top spots in the table of most-watched content. This is what has happened this month for both movies and series. If we talk about cinema, the most-watched film has been As Bestas with 2,167,000 unique viewers, which is a great success. It is placed well above the second most successful film of the month, which has corresponded to Prime Video: Beekeper: The Protector, which has gathered 1,568,000 viewers who did not want to miss this action film by Jason Statham. The other most-watched films have been Dune Part 2 on Max, Ferrari on Prime Video and Inside Out on Disney+, which has taken advantage of the release of the sequel.

As for series, Netflix takes first place with The Bridgertons and The Asunta Case, followed by The Boys on Prime Video, House of the Dragon on Max and Red Queen on Prime Video. These results show how the leadership of these platforms is not only reflected in subscribers, but also in the content they release.
