Selfie apps: the choice is huge
You can of course take selfies with the standard Camera app on your iPhone, but it’s also nice to add something extra to a selfie. Below you will find apps for simple self-portraits, but also filter apps with which you can create a work of art of yourself, or apply virtual make-up to your face.
- B612
- Facetune
- Retrica
- BeautyPlus
- YouCamPerfect
- Candy Camera
- Picr
- snapchat
- Other selfie apps
A small warning in advance: most of the apps we discuss are commercial in nature. You can often use some free options, but the makers try to entice you into a long-term subscription or use advertising trackers. So read the privacy conditions carefully before using the apps.
B612
B612 is an app that offers a lot of possibilities to edit a selfie. The app looks sleek and makes it easy to take a good photo. There are a lot of choices when it comes to filters that will make you look flattering. You can also add crazy ‘stickers’ to make your selfie cute, sweet or tough. Furthermore, the app contains a make-up tool and you can make photo collages. With AR filters you can make it as crazy as you want. The app takes into account age, gender, skin tone, lighting, and other variables.
B612 is named after the asteroid from the book ‘The Little Prince’ by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a classic children’s book that also appeals to adults. The 43 filters in the app refer to when the little prince watched 43 sunsets in one day. Even without this background information, the app is just fun to use. You have such a beautiful selfie on social media.
Facetune
Facetune is perhaps the most famous selfie app. This is a widely used app to get rid of imperfections and to ensure that you look just a little better than in reality. Of course you can’t get rid of every freckle, but it’s an ideal app to camouflage that one big pimple just a little more. FaceTune is easy to use and you can edit a photo in no time.
You have a lot of options to make your face look just a little better. For example, you can smoothen your skin, remove wrinkles, change your hair color, apply makeup, whiten teeth or remove red eyes. Some of the features are free and others you have to pay for. You can share the selfie from the app on your favorite social media channel. In addition to the paid version, there is also a free version with in-app purchases. Both are still regularly updated.
Retrica
Retrica, like the two apps mentioned above, has been around for a long time. The makers claim to have 250 million active users worldwide – and that’s great because Retrica is not that well known and to get the most out of it you will have to pay a few euros per month. Retrica contains 190+ filters for your selfies, which you can preview before taking the picture. You can also create layouts. Paying users get access to all new filters.
BeautyPlus
Just like FaceTune, BeautyPlus helps you to have a taut face without blemishes. You can also brighten your eyes, narrow your nose, get rid of your double chin, and more. The app can further blur the background and make the selfie more attractive. With AR filters you can decorate your face to look like a cat.
The app is made by the same makers as the Meitu app, which we previously called a “disaster for your privacy”. This app had a strong Asian twist, with exaggerated filters that made you look like a manga character, while BeautyPlus has softer filters that will appeal more to Western users.
YouCamPerfect
If you don’t object to a slightly fake-looking appearance, YouCam Perfect is a great app. This is a selfie app with tons of beauty effects. You remove wrinkles, make your eyes bigger, give yourself thicker lips and sharpen the details that need to stand out. You can also delete objects and unwanted friends or create collages. The Auto mode automatically enhances your selfie, so you hardly have to work on it.
Candy Camera
Candy Camera is also free to use and has no in-app purchases. This app can put a timestamp on your photos so that you can remember what you looked like on a given day. Or how you wanted to look, because Candy Camera can make you slimmer, lighten or darken your skin, apply lipstick and more. With the make-up stickers you can try mascara, blush and the like without having to go to the store.
It contains a lot of stickers that you can use to decorate your selfies. You can also – as with many selfie apps – combine multiple photos into a collage. Will be updated less frequently.
Picr
The apps mentioned above mainly focus on people who put a lot of effort into looking good. Picr may appeal to a somewhat broader audience, as it’s not about beautifying your selfies. This app simply reminds you to take a picture of yourself regularly. This way you get a kind of diary in which your appearance keeps changing.
These photos then appear as a grid in the app, so that you can clearly see the difference. This is useful, for example, if you are busy losing weight or building muscle bundles, or if you like to photograph yourself in the same position in different places. For example in Apple Stores.
Since the arrival of Instagram Stories, it is also possible to make funny selfies with Instagram. Of course this was also possible in the past, but with Instagram Stories you can immediately apply nice filters to the photo. The filters are a bit copied from Snapchat, but they are still very nice. Once you’ve taken the selfie, you can instantly share it with all your friends on Instagram or save it to share on other channels.
snapchat
Snapchat is the app for young people to easily share photos with each other. The app is also very suitable for taking nice selfies. Especially with the crazy filters you can apply. There are tons of funny filters to choose from and play with. It is also possible to add all kinds of decorations such as stickers and emoticons to make your selfie even more fun. You can also put all kinds of stickers and other decorations on your selfie before sharing them with friends. Of course, all these filters and lenses have also been adopted by Facebook, where you will find similar variants. But Snapchat invented them.
