Microsoft has recently presented its new set of Copilot+ functions based on artificial intelligence that users have not finished liking. Laptops that have support for this technology have added a specific key that no one uses. Finally, Microsoft will allow Windows 11 users to reassign the Copilot key function that no one uses.
You should know that for Microsoft Copilot+ to work, the Windows 11 operating system is required. In addition, you need a laptop with a processor that has NPU cores with a computing power equal to or greater than 40 TOPS.
The problem the company faces is that no one is using this AI-based technology because it is quite useless. It does not offer anything really interesting to the user and many users complain about having a new key on the laptop keyboard that does nothing. In response to complaints, Microsoft will allow the user to assign another function.
The Copilot key will finally become useful
We have to highlight that this set of AI functions is not without controversy. Many emphasize that it does not offer anything of value and that it is a way of forcing users to update their equipment. In addition, security and privacy are in question due to the Recall function, which performs indiscriminate captures without obfuscating passwords or other sensitive data.
One of the biggest controversies is that laptops that offer support for this technology add the Copilot key to the keyboard. If you do not use this “assistant” with AI, the truth is that you have something there that is useless and does not perform any function.
Members of the Windows Insiders program have noticed that they are seeing the ability to customize the function of the Copilot key. You should know that it is not something so pretty, since there are limitations, according to Microsoft, for security reasons.
The Insiders release notes go into more detail on this. They highlight that they have added the possibility of “customizing” the function of the Copilot key on the keyboards. We can configure it to launch only applications packaged and signed in MSIX.
If you don’t know what MSIX packaging is, it is a modern packaging mode for Windows applications. Essentially, we can assign this key a shortcut for an application that uses this packaging.
Many highlight that it would be interesting to be able to assign this key a kind of quick access to operating system directories. It would be interesting to be able to assign this key a shortcut to that folder that you use constantly, for example.
At the moment, it is not available to all users, but the path to make the change is as follows:
- Right click on the Windows icon and go to “Settings”.
- Next, we must go to the “Personalization” option.
- Now, we must go to the “Text Entry” section.
Here we can assign the Copilot key to launch an application with MSIX packaging. If your keyboard lacks this key, obviously, customizing it will do you absolutely no good.
It indicates that it is possible that Microsoft will reverse this feature in the future. In the end, this key is entered to access Copilot functions and, we assume, as they add new functions and/or capabilities, it will become more “must-have” and will reverse the possibility of customization.
