Spectacular!

A few days ago the seventh installment of the Gran Turismo saga was put on sale, one of the most popular racing video games in history, and a YouTuber has had a great ideal: Gran Turismo 7 against real life, that’s a return to Laguna Seca in a Volkswagen Golf GTI.

The idea came from Will L, or so he is called on YouTube, and he has made a video that you can see below, where he compares a lap of the famous Laguna Seca circuit in the video game with the same lap in real life, using the same car… his car, a Volkswagen Golf GTI with some modifications.

To make the comparison as fair as possible, the YouTuber created a version of the Golf GTI Mk7 from Gran Turismo 7 as close as possible to his car, adding the options ‘Sport Hard Tires’, ‘Sport Brake Pads’ and ‘Adjustable Suspension’ .

In this way, he was able to imitate his own car, equipped with Nexen tires, four-piston Brembo brakes and BBK suspension. Both cars, the real one and the virtual one, have a similar power, around 250 CV.

Thanks to a camera placed in the helmet, the YouTuber recreates the camera angle of the video game, in which the steering wheel and the pilot’s hands are seen.

The driver is able to take the corners in the video game almost like in the real world, which indicates that Gran Turismo 7 has done a great job of recreating the world of racing on a video game console.

As a general rule, you tend to achieve faster lap times in a video game than in reality, due to a number of factors, but the GT7 remains fairly faithful. In the end, the YouTuber sets a time of 1:46.24 at Laguna Seca.

During the lap of the circuit, some differences are appreciated, such as the speed at which the landscape moves, faster in reality than in the game, the times the driver moves the wheel, less in reality than in the virtual world.

You can read the analysis of Gran Turismo 7 from our colleagues at Hobby Consoles. The simulation will never really be 1:1, but the ability of the game’s creators to recreate the experience of driving a real car on a track is impressive.
