It was one of our best kept secrets and we have finally been able to bring to light the images with the final model that we were able to see on the spot in London a few weeks ago. It is the Ioniq 6, a 100% electric saloon, direct inheritance of the Hyundai Prophecy Concept, which represents a further step in the strategy of the Korean brand to delve into groundbreaking products from the point of view of design, highly connected and technological, and with interiors made from recycled materials.
The Ioniq 6 is part of this strategy, a sedan with a dynamic cut, with coupé shapes and whose lines are sometimes reminiscent of models from other brands (in the rear there are similarities to the rear of a Porsche 911 and seen from the side it is very reminiscent of a Mercedes CLS).
Interpretations aside, the front does seem much newer to me, with darkened headlights that protrude outside the hood line and almost touch the front wings. Its Matrix LED technology houses several light functions, which are finished off by strips of pixels just below.
The relationship that Ioniq makes with the pixels (it started with the Ioniq 5) is still intact, since you find them both in front and in the rear. In fact, the brand logo on the steering wheel is dispensed with again by four points.
Despite the fact that we have been able to verify live and direct that it does not seem so big, the truth is that it is a large sedan, since it measures 4.85 meters in length, 1.88 meters in width and a little less than a meter and a half tall. The key measure is the wheelbase, which is close to three meters and favors quite loose rear seats.
Thanks to its practically flat floor, where the batteries are located, three people can travel comfortably, with plenty of room for their knees, although the level for the head is somewhat more fair due to that steep drop in the roof. In order not to have your legs too bent (the bench is close to the ground), you can put your feet under the front seats.
In front, the atmosphere of technology is very reminiscent of that of its brother, the Ioniq 5, with two screens, one for the instrumentation and another for the multimedia system. They are not the only ones, because the screens of the rear-view cameras are located at the ends, whose situation (quite above) is ideal.
The Ioniq 6 also offers more touch surfaces for the climate control and a few physical buttons for direct access to the main functions make up an open and usable interior with numerous storage compartments.
It’s time to talk about what it will have as a powertrain: this is the second Hyundai model manufactured on the e-GMP platform, dedicated exclusively to electric cars. The Ioniq 6 will bring different levels of power, although the top of the range will be the one that brings with it two electric motors, one for each axis.
It will be helped by a 77 kWh battery to feed the two engines that will reach a power of 230 kW. With this battery, autonomy will be around 500 kilometers.
There are no prices yet, and to see the new Ioniq 6 in Europe we will have to wait until next 2023.
