The increasingly widespread use of the so-called Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP) has made it necessary to regulate important aspects of their use, such as where they can and cannot circulate. This is the key to the penalty of 200 euros for electric scooters announced by the DGT.

Numerous studies ensure that more than half of the users of this type of vehicle do not know what regulations they must respect. They do not know, for example, if the use of a helmet is mandatory or if they can drive on the road or on the sidewalk; neither what is the maximum speed they can reach, nor that the same rate of alcohol is applied to them as to drivers of motor vehicles.

They are also not at all confident when asked about the technical specifications of their electric scooter and, much less, when it comes to listing those that they must comply with in the next two years in order to continue circulating legally.

But since it is still mandatory for electric scooters to have to be certified in accordance with the provisions of the Technical Characteristics Manual of the VMP of the DGT, we are going to focus on the fine of 200 euros that is already in force and that, perhaps, many users are unaware of.

This is how the DGT explains it on its Twitter account:

The fine of 200 euros contemplated by the DGT is for those users of electric scooters that circulate on sidewalks and other pedestrian areas. It does not entail withdrawal of points since, at the moment, no type of license is required for its use.

There is also a fine of 200 euros for those who use the mobile phone while riding the scooter, even if they use headphones (moreover, the use of these devices with the VMP running, either to talk or listen to music, is an offense that penalized with 200 euros).

The same amount applies to those who do not use a protective helmet and when driving at night without lighting or reflective clothing or elements.

In case the scooter is used by two people, something not allowed, the fine is 100 euros.
