Your cooling system is the key to its operation

In the world of technology, surprise is a mantra erected into law. Every day we are surprised by inventions, advances or novelties that try to improve what already exists. In this case, Mahle, one of the world’s giants in automotive components, has developed an electric motor, which, it claims, is the most durable on the market.

This new engine is suitable for implementation in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, construction machinery and tractors. Its official presentation will be in September of this year, during the celebration of the IAA Transportation in Hannover.

The feature that distinguishes it from other motors is its cooling system that allows the SCT (Superior Continuous Torque) to operate at high power levels for an unlimited period of time. The resulting machine is a drive that not only achieves a 90% tip power rating but is also compact and lightweight, allowing it to be used in everyday use.

The “technological leap” that Mahle refers to in his initial campaign is given by the integrated oil cooling system, which not only takes care of the cooling itself, but at the same time also allows the waste heat resulting from the system to be used vehicle overview.

In general, electric motors offer two figures of power. The peak power is the maximum that they can reach, although only in short periods of time and limited repetitions, and continuous power. This second is lower because the drive overheats under high load forcing the power to be reduced.

“It is easy to build large electric motors that deliver high performance in a short time. What was still missing from the market until now were durable yet compact units for making unrestricted electric vehicles for everyday use,” explains Martin Berger, Group Head of Research and Advanced Engineering at Mahle. “Our new SCT electric motor is the solution.”

From the German company they put as an example of use that of an electric truck that has to complete routes such as a climb to a mountain pass, or an electric car that needs to repeatedly accelerate fully, as in a circuit.

Some scenarios where the current technology fails to meet the needs of certain vehicles with solvency and where the Mahle system will offer an alternative.

The SCT is designed as a synchronous motor (PSM) with neodymium permanent magnets in the rotor, making compact design with high energy density possible. However, to achieve greater independence from commodity prices and geopolitical developments, Mahle offers the SCT without magnets and thus without metals.

In the batteries of this brand, inductive power transmission is used, that is, without contact, which allows the engine to work without wear and with high efficiency at high speeds. An efficiency that, in this case, is greater than 95%, according to the manufacturer.
