To begin with, you must bear in mind that there are two types of trailers that differ in their Maximum Authorized Mass (MMA). On the one hand, light trailers that have an MMA less than or equal to 750 kilos. On the other hand, non-light trailers with an MMA greater than 750 kilos.

For light trailers, it is not mandatory to have additional insurance and you will not have to have another circulation permit beyond the B car license. However, if it is for a non-lightweight trailer or caravan of more than 750 kilos GVW, it is important to take these requirements into account.

The General Directorate of Traffic specifies that it is mandatory to have the B96 permit, an authorization that will allow you to transport trailers with a Maximum Authorized Mass of more than 750 kilos. Of course, provided that the combination of the trailer and the vehicle does not exceed 4,250 kilos, since from that weight it is mandatory to have the B+E license.

Another requirement for these trailers and caravans of more than 750 kilos is that the vehicle must be registered and will display a red license plate both on the trailer and on the vehicle that is towing it.

And it is also mandatory to have insurance for this trailer or caravan. This means that, in addition to compulsory car insurance, you must also have a specific policy for the towed vehicle.

The DGT is strict with all these rules and requirements that you must meet if you transport a non-light trailer with an MMA of more than 750 kilos. In addition to being defenseless in the event of an accident, you expose yourself to an economic fine of between 600 and 3,000 euros depending on the type of vehicle.
