Longer, wider and taller, the Toyota Aygo X Cross continues to dominate the city with a more offroad look that will open the doors to more public. Its engine is modest, but sufficient
The scaredness of brands in the micro-urban segment is more than evident and only manufacturers like Kia, Hyundai or Suzuki continue to bet on it. Toyota too, and that’s why I wanted to thoroughly test the Toyota Aygo X Cross.
As a novelty, to begin with, it adds the name ‘X Cross’ and adopts a higher body with a clear SUV character. As you know, this is a completely new model (it replaces the previous Aygo outright) and is based on the shortened platform of the current Yaris.
That brings to the Toyota Aygo X Cross succulent benefits, since it is wider, taller and slightly longer, and therefore more capable inside, although later we will see that not in all rows.
This is the Aygo X Cross inside and out
On the outside, the small Toyota Aygo X Cross stands out for its two-tone paint and its huge wheel arches (the wheels are 18 inches), with plastic protectors that result in the idea of giving a more adventurous image.
The feeling from out here, in any case, is of being more of a car and of almost slipping into the Yaris segment. But that idea disappears when you get inside.
It is clear that the passenger compartment in the front row has improved its presentation and, in this complete Chic finish, you will not miss anything (with driving assistants more typical of higher segments), but there are no miracles in the rear row. ..
Due to space for the legs and for the head, it is not highly recommended if you are going to make long journeys (the seats are also far from being the most comfortable).
As for the capacity of the trunk, this seems to me more than meritorious, because it increases its volume from a meager 168 to a more useful 231 liters (829 with the rear seatbacks folded down).
In summary: it exceeds the levels of the previous Aygo and that results in its capacity. Front is fine; behind, the gap is scarce. The trunk is much improved.
Toyota Aygo X Cross engine
I get going. In the range you will only have one engine, the old acquaintance 1.0 three-cylinder atmospheric and without electrification with 72 HP of power and 94 Nm of torque. Enough? They are, as long as you move around the city. It is his favorite scenario, because it is true that when going out on the open road and highway they are scarce and do not allow you to overtake with solvency.
What this gasoline block always stands out for is consumption, since it is difficult to exceed 6.0 liters per 100 km in normal use.
Of course, it is strange that a specialist in the city only offers the C label of the DGT. A mild hybrid system would do quite well.
Behavior Toyota Aygo X Cross
In this test I was also surprised by how agile it is, something you feel when you step on the accelerator in low gears.
Its little more than 1,000 kilos help you get out of traffic lights quickly and move through traffic with ease, with a steering that contributes its own, since with a 9.4-meter turning diameter you will turn around in a span.
Price and rivals new Aygo X Cross
It does not have many rivals, but among them we must mention a Fiat Panda in its City Cross version, with a not so modern presentation (but an efficient all-wheel drive) or the Suzuki Ignis, with an ECO label and also the option of all-wheel drive. . In both cases, the price plays more in favor of the Aygo X Cross.
The Chic finish of the Toyota Aygo is expensive, but it comes with absolutely everything as standard, with equipment more typical of higher segments. Its price is not a bargain (17,150 euros), although the range starts at a more reasonable 14,400 euros.
Conclution
The best
Cheerful and well-equipped interior, it spends little and offers a sufficient response in the city.
Worst
He is a convinced urban, although the C label conditions him in the most restricted areas of large cities. Space behind very little.
