SUVs would like to have the behavior of this Audi A4 allroad and, above all, spend as little as this 40 TDI S tronic quattro version that we tested.
If you like this car, you know what the topic is about. Yes, it has a country look, which is what it takes, but much better dynamism than that of SUVs and even more interior space and a trunk with a capacity of 495 to 1,495 liters.
And no, the allroad is not an A4 Avant with four black plastics, protections and roof bars to appear more robust. We tested the Audi A4 allroad 40 TDI S tronic quattro.
It is true that it has all that, but also a ground clearance 35 mm higher than the rest of the range and that gives it a real plus when you leave the asphalt. In total it has 17.5 cm of ride height, which is not much, but a distance similar to that of many SUVs. An off-road driving mode is added to enjoy it on roads.
In this case, I have tested the turbodiesel version with 204 hp, an engine that impresses with its good thrust from far below, since it has 400 Nm of torque from 1,750 rpm. Its benefits are not bad at all: from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and 232 km/h top speed.

Although what must be highlighted in this case is that it relies on a small 12V electrical system that serves as support in acceleration phases and allows you to drive under sail (with the engine off) if you are going at a constant speed and hardly touching the accelerator. . In addition, it has an ECO label from the DGT.
As you can guess, this translates into ridiculous consumption if you know how to drive efficiently. In my case I have achieved an expense of only 5.0 l/100 km. But that is only possible if you intend to spend as little as possible and drive very calmly. With normal driving, consumption is 6.1 liters, so you can travel more than 900 kilometers without having to stop to refuel.
And what stands out about the Audi A4 allroad is that if you pick up the pace it gives you a precise and stable response, as well as quick gear changes, thanks to its seven-speed DSG transmission, which is fast and effective.
Without forgetting, of course, that it comes standard with quattro traction, a system already well known in the brand, which works by means of a multi-disc clutch, which gives absolute priority to the front axle, unless there is loss of traction, which is when you attach the rear.
I also find its sound insulation spectacular. The diesel engine is not heard and the interior noise levels that I have been able to measure are among the lowest I have seen lately.
Of course, one detail that I think should be improved is its turning circle, because it takes almost 12 meters to make a U-turn and that’s too much. And the weight is not that it is very high, but it exceeds 1,700 kilos, which is not little.
Another possible point of improvement? Your media system. It’s not bad, but you can tell that it’s a car that was created in 2016, no matter how much it received a restyling. It equips the 12.3″ Virtual cockpit plus and the 10.1″ main screen as standard.
The A4 allroad is for sale with this version 40 TDI of 204 CV, for 56,050 euros and with the 45 TFSI of 265 CV, for 60,890 euros. If you compare it with other country-looking sedans, only the Volvo V60 Cross Country is more expensive. And be careful with the extras…
Conclution
I don’t give it the best grade, because it is not cheap and with this engine it is not valid for everyone. But if you travel a lot and like to leave the asphalt regularly, I can’t recommend anything better. Clearly I would buy a car of this style before an SUV.
