The first SUV in the history of Porsche, the Cayenne, finalizes its renovation before reaching the market, undergoing demanding resistance tests in Spain.

The Porsche Cayenne has the honor of being the first SUV that the Stuttgart firm marketed. After three active generations, Porsche is finalizing the renewal of the 2023 Cayenne before its arrival on the market, with prototypes and pre-series vehicles that are undergoing demanding endurance tests in countries such as Spain, Morocco and Finland.

The third generation of the Cayenne hit the market in 2017 and now the German firm is working on updating it, with “significant improvements in propulsion systems, chassis, design, equipment and connectivity,” explains the manufacturer. “This is one of the most important product updates in Porsche history,” says Michael Schätzle, Cayenne Range Manager.

In addition to the update that the model will receive in the mechanical section, the engineers at the Weissach Development Center have made a series of important improvements to the Cayenne chassis with the aim of “achieving an even wider margin between sportiness on the road, comfort over long distances and off-road capability”.

Porsche has confirmed that the new Cayenne will receive a semi-active chassis, as well as a “new, extensively digitized drive concept” and display, and new, enhanced connectivity features. One of the great novelties of the new Porsche Cayenne 2023 will be the innovative lighting technology of the HD-Matrix LED headlights.

To test the feasibility, performance and reliability of all these components, Porsche engineers are carrying out an exhaustive test program with prototypes of the refreshed Cayenne, including virtual simulations and tests in real conditions.

Porsche’s goal is to “guarantee operational stability and functional integration of all components, in more demanding situations than the customer usually experiences,” the company says. In a few months, all these prototypes and pre-series vehicles will have completed more than 200,000 kilometers in urban traffic, secondary roads and highways.

The actual driving tests are taking place in Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. In total, Porsche has covered more than 4 million kilometers with the Cayenne prototypes.

“We demand the most from the Cayenne, something that many users will never do. For this reason, the new model has been subjected to tough off-road tests in Spain, has crossed difficult dunes in Morocco and has successfully overcome highly dynamic courses on ice rinks in Finland and on circuits such as the Nürburgring”, says Dirk Lersch, who runs the Cayenne prototype testing team.

The premiere of the new 2023 Porsche Cayenne is scheduled for this spring.
