As of January 1, 2026, the DGT will only allow the use of connected V-16 lights
As of January 1, 2026, emergency triangles will be a thing of the past and all stops on the road will have to be signaled with lights. However, only V-16 emergency lights that have been certified by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) will be accepted, a list in which, for the moment, there are only three models.
If you are forced to stop your vehicle due to a breakdown, accident or any other emergency, you must always signalize your position for your own safety and that of other road users.
Until a few weeks ago, to indicate to other drivers that there was a car, motorcycle or van stopped on the shoulder, you had to place the emergency triangles (in this link we explain how and at what distance). Now there are two options: the triangles and the V-16 emergency lights.
As of the first day of 2026, only lights will be allowed, but with an important nuance: it will not be possible to use any light, only those connected to the DGT platform 3.0 will be legal. The million dollar question is: what are they?
The three V-16 lights certified by the DGT
The DGT has a public list of V-16 lights that meet all the requirements to receive official certification; an open list because it will be expanded in the coming months and that, for now, only includes three models (in this link):

Currently, connected and offline V16 beacons coexist on the market. Both are valid and can be used as a signaling method in exactly the same way as emergency triangles; It will not be like this in three years, when neither the use of triangles nor the use of non-connected lights will be allowed, hence the recommendation is to acquire one of those already certified.
The fine for not using any signaling system is 200 euros (without loss of points); this will also be the sanction that will be applied as of 2026 for those drivers who continue to use non-certified V-16 lights.
